Warranty - to renew or not to renew

I've just looked at the actual prices on 't website:

Insured warranty:

No excess = £348.26 add breakdown = £375.25
£50 excess = £319.28 add breakdown = £346.27
£100 excess = £294.44 add breakdown = £321.42

Emergency cover only = £127.00

So, the best I could get it for is £294.44. I get my breakdown cover with Carole Nash.

Roughly 0.80p a day for indemnity against an insured event, repaired at an authorised BMW dealership with genuine parts, at a time abound date (near enough) to your convenience...... Plus a ton, for the excess.

By way of comparison:

A copy of the Sun is 0.60p

A pint of beer is about £3:80

20 cigarettes is a shade under £8

I extend every year as, being a numpty, I can't even change a headlight bulb.

I do around 7000 miles a year with 2500 in Europe, for me it is peace of mind.

I also think that it has to be worth more second hand if it has warranty (not that I'm going to sell it anytime soon).

2006 GSA that I bought with 2300 miles just under two years old, now has 39000 miles and apart from a new battery and a few bulbs, hasn't missed a beat.

1999 1150, final drive went in Norway, warranty company offered me £3000 and a plane ticket on the phone as this is what it was going to cost them. I declined as the bike was worth around £5k at the time.

That's why I extend every year!

At the end of the day, it is insurance. For the most part they make money out of it - so for the majority of people it will not be worth the additional cost but for a smaller number it will most definitely be a very worthwhile expense.

As the cost to renew mine was higher than I expected I choose not to do it before my European bike tour - thankfully the only events were a puncture (new expensive rear tyre at snotty French BMW Motorrad dealer), and two blown front bulbs.

I extended the warranty on the HP2 last year, but as I do less than 1000 miles a year on that particular bike, and it gets an annual service at a main dealer, I decided not to renew it this time round.
