OK - the warranty's up in a few weeks, so I'm looking for things to look for*.

Front engine cover corrosion
Clutch cylinder seal
Gearbox gasket
Final drive bearing seal

What else is there to look out for?

* Well, ok - I feel like a whinge at a hapless dealer

Warped disks/brake judder.
Play in final drive bearings.
Spoked wheel runout if fitted.
Cracks in rear disk mounting flange.

Give it a damned good wash and check all over for corrosion.

Checked all that and what I came up with. There must be something else I can harangue them with :nenau

I can't believe your actually looking for something to winge about to try and get one last freebee,is your life so empty?.Why not put it in for a service and see what they come up with?,if it aint broke then it aint broke.

warrenty.

cheque book +1 i had all of those problems and more all after the origenal warrenty had expired, best money i ever spent, i gagged at the initial expense but ended up saving hundreds,

Yep, I took extended warranty too. Best £310 I ever spent - New final drive, New fuel pump relay( + 1 night B & B in a 4* hotel in Switzerland for me, my wife and my 2 mates who stayed with me when I broke down on the motorway), New Clutch cylinder seal ( bike picked up and returned from dealers) Will take it out again too :thumb

Slight harsh I feel!

I have done the same, my warranty is nearly up and have had a few bits replaced (corrosion) before it has expired.
I would not have faith in a dealer to look for warranty work and it is not in their interest as the paper work to get payment from BMW rather than from the customer is a right pain the in backside.
Be aware that the extended warranty does not cover corrosion.

i think it was said in jest:rob, but that is what warranty is for. If parts are not fit for purpose then peeps are entitled to replacements:thumb

what does the BuMW advertising say on these bikes, "Unstoppable" and "Nothing on earth comes between this bike and its destination. It is built without compromise to handle everything nature has to throw at it, be it on road or off.":blast

Well then get the unstoppable bike sorted if you can:augie

No not in jest, can't stand the something for nothing must find fault attitude,if you look after your bike and check it regulary then there's no need for last minute panic,if I was a dealer and you turned up with a list of faults at the last minute then I'd show you both the door and my size 12.

I think if you read some of the above posts these breakdowns are not from lack of checking the bike regurlarly, final drive being one:augie

No if you were a dealer you'd have to swallow it and pass it on to BuMW:thumb2

size 12 you say, nice :D

Sounds to me like bmw are over a barrel with warranty then, where will it draw the line?looking for faults that don't exist yet but might at some point in the future!,the worst thing for reducing a bikes reliability and finish was jet washers becoming so cheap.

No not in jest, can't stand the something for nothing must find fault attitude...

But BMW offered the warranty - I didn't make them. And personally, I'd rather find a fault in my garage as opposed to the M25.

Anyway, it's all academic as I can't find anything to whinge about. 2 years and 24000 miles of everyday trouble free riding.

But it's a 1200 - there must be something wrong - everyone says they're unreliable.

I guess it'll fall to bits on 1st May.

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me, checking a bike over just before the warranty expires for known faults and weak points.

One last freebee, you say? Well, it's not free, and I have no idea why you think it might be. The average cost of warranty work is built into the cost of every new bike sold. BMW Motorrad is a business, not a charity, as far as I know.

I don't agree with your bid to become a BMW dealer, whatever your shoe size. I do however agree with you on jet washers and keeping a close eye on the bike.

Like it or not.......faults are faults, whether presented en mass to the dealer at the end of the warranty period any other time ...If it doesn't qualify for some reason I am sure the dealer will soon tell us so...........if it does then so be it.

I don't blame you for double checking just before the warranty period is up.........and as one person suggests it is not 'something for nothing'. Isn't it what the warranty period is for?

I don't see anything wrong with the dealer 'snagging' a bike before it go's out of warranty because:

1: It's work for the dealer which they get paid for doing by BMW.

2: It keeps the customer happy which may result in a repeat sale

3: If it does result in a repeat sale then the dealer has a decent bike that he doesn't then have to fix at his expense

It's a win win situation :clap

Thats the right way to go about it,take it in to your dealer and get them to give it an interim service explaining that the warranty is almost up and you value his opinion pointing out any concerns you may have,if its ok then its ok,but you'll have a receipt and if anything major does break then you have a bargaining tool, not nit picking your own snag list in the hope for some last minute freebees
