Bought a service kit which came with GL4 grade oil for the transmission and final drive. used it, but noticed in the book it says GL5 oil is the preferred grade for transmission and final drive.

Should I just ride it and use it till the next service, or do I need to change it earlier than that. I usually do the oils at 6000miles, or thereabouts.

Yes I know it's another oil question.

Change it now

The reason GL5 is specified, is that it has additional qualities such as anti-foaming agents.:comfort
Also as St Eptoe has said many times, your bike is worth more than a £10 it would cost you for the correct oil.:augie

I did the same a bit ago and the gearbox oil started to sort of pant out of the breather
Swapped it after I got some 5 OK since

I reckon it will be fine.... but then I put B&Q oil in the engine:augie I've used GL4 and 5, sometimes together, and its been fine so far (90k)

Agreed, I assumed, obviously wrongly, that ordering a service kit from a reputable supplier would mean I'd get stuff that was per the spec. Next time I'll ask questions to make sure.

Most auto shops and garages stock GL5 and even the older K's specced it so it's a surprise that you received GL4.

The poster said it's GL4 spec..........

yep know what he posted, thought the EPX that I just got from Motoworks (which they recommend with the big service kit) said GL4 on the bottle so went and checked the Castrol spec.

I was wrong it doesn't say GL4 on the bottle but it does say GL5

.......... So your wild GUESS would be incorrect.

yup! my GUESS was incorrect and easily ignored by the OP, your point ?

My poiht ??? In case anyone else took notice of incorrect info - Some people don't read all the threads and just skim through them, as perhaps your good self did which lead to the additional last two posts and watsed both our time :D).

If we see something wrong it should be pointed out, in case others not so informed take it as being correct.

I would not worry about GL4, it is entitled to exist, but I would not put it in my gearbox either, Halfords GL5 semi synth comes out at £9.99 last time I did the gearbox. I do fancy trying the Rock oil 20w50 semi synth next time though :augie
