Wasserhead achilles heel

What if the dealer installed guards themselves, even before they released the bike to me?

Then you'd be good to go I would think.

I'll make sure the first one that comes on one of my Alaska trips get rad guards as I guarentee the crap and rubbish on the Dalton will hole it.

I would still check with BMW themselves, the dealer should (but may not) know whether this will void the engine warranty - but they should check, they may be as ignorant to the fact as we are

The were very specific with previous 'offroad' type watercooled GS singles and even fitting fork boots was a no-no

I guess if Rad Covers should have been fitted to the WC 12GS, then BMW would have made one, whilst in development (as they did with all the G650X series bikes which has a plastic louvred & slotted Rad Cover, whereas the F650GS/Dakar did not)

My hunch is that you shouldn't fit Rad covers

My dealer fitted my Touratech radiator guards before I collected the bike. They did say that they wouldn't advise fitting them as it may invalidate the warranty, however, I didn't sign a disclaimer. Of all the ones I've seen, the Touratech seem to have the most airflow, and I figured that if they cause a problem that Touratech will foot the bill. In all reality though, temperatures never get too hot here in the UK, so there's always plenty of cool air to calm the bike down.:rob:D

I would definitely check with BMW, they are very twitchy about things like this and during the 1 million miles of testing, they must deem they are unnecessary or even detrimental to the engine cooling system

The WC Rad is not exactly overly large either:eek:

IMO, if we lived in a hot country where the bike is constantly running at higher temperatures, I would be more concerned. Here in the UK, I don't think its an issue.:rob

We'll see :augie

You're off to Italy this week, no doubt you'll get stuck in traffic around Lake Como and Varese (par for the course around that area)

Isn't their a Guzzi ride of 1000 bikes - plenty of opportunity for overheating

Let us know how you get on:comfort

Oil cooler guards??

They should fit plastic ones at the factory, at the very least....

Anyone fitting aftermarket (TT type) guards, have you checked with BMW Motorrad or your dealer to see if you have invalidated the factory BMW warranty?

If you fitted rad guards or even rubber fork boot gaiters to the water cooled F650GS/Dakar etc, BMW would not honour any engine warranty claims, because in their opnion..............airflow and therefore engine cooling had been impeded and compromised

Just worth checking before you fit Rad Guards to your 12GS WC, I would check with BMW - because I think they would advise that you didn't:D

Guess you don't have a rad guard on your oil cooler rad then??? at least the the WC has a fan that cuts in, can't see it being a problem.:D

It reduces airflow....................so no - not since 1996:D

Well I've ridden mine with an oil cooler guard in 50deg C with no problem, it's when you're stationary or riding slowing off road with a following wind you notice the temp rise.:thumb

Dam it:blast well I have had one on mine for the last 40k and never had a problem. and now have the rather nice Mark Hooton rad guards on the wc :D can't see me ever having any problems with this lovely wasser boxer:P

Fuck me JB, you are really putting the cats amongst the pigeons here .

So, if you are taking your WC off road or into the bush like the OP, any sensible person would fit rad guards because it's an obvious weak point. It matters not that it's a beemer because a stone will just puncture it. If I had one on the Dalton this year,it's the first thing I would do because you can't find a plumber for love nor money up there. I see Nick Plumb's WC has rad guards fitted and BMW supply that so I'm thinking it's no problem. :thumb2

I wonder if everyone stirred this kind of shit when people put oil cooler guards on the older GS's:nenau

Remember Tim, it doesn't get warm in Yorkshire so old JB would never notice a temperature rise:Motomartin

I too got a stone in the rad in the first 40 miles of ownership riding back from the dealers after collecting the bike, it left a good impact however it never leaked but i still took the rad off and had it checked and the impact repaired.

Fecking stupid idea leaving rads exposed, regarding voiding the warranty lets be honest you would remove rad guards before any warranty claim well i would as they tried to void a final drive because i had a wavy disc FFS .

One of the attractions of the GS is the ability to ride OVER the traffic!:aidan

Its only in the 60's there at the weekend, so still hotter than most of our summers.:D
