Seems that every year it's the same thing, it runs like a bag of spanners, fuel filter is bunged up and once I look at it the drain hole if bunged with shit.

So it'll be a petrol out, tank off, petrol and water out, dry and vent the tank, refit make tidy later this week....

mental note to self must tidy up garage up.:blast

I know my 1200 GSA has some water in the tank as I saw it fall in from the blocked "Gutter" when I opened the filler after the recent storms , I also understand the 1200 doesnt have a fuel filter so if its running ok should I worry or will it gradually mix and burn away ?

Water and Petrol won't mix. The water will be floating below the petrol, the fuel pump won't be picking up the water as it doesn't draw from the very bottom.

The 1200 does a fuel filter (ok, I don't own one) but I'd be very surprised if it doesn't.

Stick a can of this in it http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/...151&storeId=10001&partNumber=797696&langId=-1

It makes the water and the fuel mix and will burn it in the engine. Simpler than taking the tank off.

from a previous thread

The 1200 does not have a replaceable fuel filter cannister like the 11xx's.

There is an integral gauze filter in the pump but as far as I understand it is not a service item.

also not a lot of branches of halfords round this way but thanks for the info

every Airhead i've ever owned has this problem and i've never found a cure.
cant buy 'Dry fuel' in Ireland.
got some while i was in U.K.....
didn't seem to make a lot of difference :nenau

methylated spirits in theory at least will absorb water, will mix with petrol and so - will exit your tank.....
tried it and....
didn't seem to make a lot of difference :nenau

so,
now what :nenau

Goldfish in the goldfish bowl. Fuel in the fuel tank. Simples :aidan

I try and run my 100GS on the reserve position on both sides after refuelling to try and reduce the amount of water that's in the tank. Otherwise all you can really do is empty it as much as possible and then take it off the bike and get the rest of what's left out. And then put in some nice clean fuel. It's probably worthwhile having as much fuel in the tank as possible as there's less area for condensation to form on the metal bits.

As someone pointed out the water 'floats' at the bottom of the tank - or as most people would say it sinks to the bottom. Finding the low point(s) of the tank isn't difficult - can't you just use a large syringe with a tube on it to suck the water out? OK, so you might not get every last drop but keep sucking (syringing) until you get petrol in the syringe and you won't be far off.

Easier than the tank off etc approach.

hmmm

that's a good point:blast

I feel a trip Halford's coming on for a looky looky see what they've got.

Stick a syphon hose (if you don't have one go to your local B&Q or fish (the real ones not he cooked ones) shop and just get a piece of clear plastic tubing... I usually carry one in panniers anyway incase of someone running out of fuel or filling the msr) into the lower lobes of the tank... siphon out until petrol starts coming out then stop.... works a treat takes about 3 minutes!

Any before anyone asks you WILL know when it's petrol and not water... not saying how I know that. Plus you will see the differnce if you siphon it into a clear container... then you can always put the petrol back in the tank with little waste.

suck it up youz says..... :eek

that's actually rather sensible :thumb2

o.k - i will try sensible. cant speak for Mr IQ though :hide

:thumb2

it is annoyingly sensible as ideas go... might include a trip to the fish shop as well...

need to clear out the garage first cos that'll make a big difference as all this global warming ain't half wet round our way....
