What's the best way to treat the surface of my old Tuareg jacket & trousers, so that rain 'rolls off' rather than soaks in...

Wash first in Nikwax Tech Wash, then treat with Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In.

Check out their web site, loads on info on there.

NIKWAX...

NIKWAX does a wash stuff and a re-proof stuff, they are two different products. (Technical terms here).

The wash in re-proofer smells a bit like PVA wood glue (Probably is PVA glue).

IMHO the spray on re-proofer from NIKWAX is a lot better than the wash in stuff. Think it's called TX wash or similar. Certainly the wash is in a green bottle and the re-proof purple.

If you're in Gore-Tex you should NEVER wash with a conditioner as is wrecks the liner.

I pull the liner (Wash that like normal with general washing liquid), pull the armour and wash the outer shell in the NIKWAX stuff. I spin it once or twice, hang it up and spray it with the PVA smelly stuff. Water beads off a treat for ages.

TIP! Dont hang it up to drip dry over a sink or worktop as it leaves a bit of a mess behind that can be a bugger to clean up DAMHIK:blast

Places like Go-Outdoors and Blacks (If they exist anymore) do the NIKWAX stuff a darn bit cheaper than Hein-Gericke etc. Buy it in big bottles and not 'one wash pouches' as they work out as costing a fortune.

Thanks Roger and Andres :thumb2

Being (in the words of my nearly 16yr old son) a 'Dirty Biker' - I don't want to was the gear, just spray something on...

I even thought of that stuff used for tents - Fabsil - I think it is...

I really want the gear to not get saturated when it rains, Goretex liners or not!

The main reason for washing is to give the re-proofer something clean to key to and to maintain breathability of the outer for the Gortex liner.

Don't worry, your kit won't come up looking shinny new, you'll still be a dirty biker..........

Or, get yourself a DPM Gortex over jacket from Anchors for £30. That's what I use, it folds up small enough to go in the Tuaregs bum pocket and your jacket will not even get damp.

Whatever you do, don't buy the 'Peter Storm' re-proofer spray from Millets. You might as well just piss on your gear.....apologies to the airhead section...:D

Been through all this with my walking/outdoor gear. The advice given on the Nikwax stuff is sound (same company as Paramo....dogs blx outdoor clothing). However, if your gear is REALLY old and knackered, then it's really old and knackered and nothing will turn the clock back....:thumb
