We know it's an Owl..................

But what kind of Owl is she???????????????????????????

Great Horned Owl from North America. Popular with falconers. Closely related to the Eagle Owl of Europe

One was free-flying around Dalkey a year or two back. When it landed on the roof of a house a concerned resident phoned the offices of BirdWatch Ireland and described this 'huge owl'. The conversation went something like....."Are you sure, we dont have big owls in this country.........perhaps it was a Long eared Owl" (about 1/4 the size) "No, this a big owl" " Really, how big ?" " Well, its big in comparison to the cat it has just caught and is eating.......!":eek

Lock up your children.

Here's one from the Caves at Ailwee this weekend - they have a Birds of prey exhibit.

Turns out owls can only rotate their heads 270 degrees - same as every other bird! it just looks more impressive with an owl due to the lack of a visible neck. See, I learned something :)
