Maybe it's a little disappointing that it's taken you and (only) your GS owning mates a while to realise that some protection is better than none. But hey, that's the joy of bikermate living; every day, something new.

No its a little disappointing that thieves have been allowed to become an epidemic in some cities.

Not all my mates have been riding all their lives with the wisdom that carries with it.

A lot of my mates are very wealthy 'born again bikers' or have just started this as a hobby pass-time. Naive yes, but prepared to do something at least.

But unless this issue is noted as a real and present threat, by TALKING ABOUT IT, then they are vulnerable to risk in a rapidly changing environment, that they were not aware of.

It's an education thing as well.

The Insurance Companies just say 'use the steering lock' not because it's useful, but because it shows intent to steal if smashed.... Like breaking and entering is shown by a smashed window, not an unlocked one.

YouTube is like a country wide Open University for thieves. They just learn skills and tactics from the internet. So the evil spreads really fast.

Some insurance companies are saying a lot more than 'use a steering lock', whilst many are completely silent on the issue of security.

Several of them are saying (demanding, is a better word) that bods take all sorts of onerous actions. These demands are often seen as unreasonable in many quarters, with several moaners on this site venting their displeasure at the impositions put upon them.

As to the wealth of your GS riding mates, whose eyes are suddenly being opened to the common sense of having even just a simple disc lock.... and using it.... as opposed to just abandoning their awesome steeds to fate.... well, I guess it's a start, not akin to locking the front door to their mansions.

As regards theft becoming endemic? Why might that be? Because bods insist on making it easy. If only to make the point; here's a photograph taken at 10:15 in Seething Lane, EC3 this morning. Share it amongst your wealthy friends, to ram the point home.

One trendy (of sorts) BMW and a Honda of some description in the very popular central London bike bay. Not a lock between them, though the Honda had a nice sticker....

The bod on the blue Honda had at least tried. Which one wouid you and your wealthy mates try to nick first, should you decide to embark on a bike theft crime, if only briefly?

I rode around east, central and west london on monday night visiting various events and leaving my awesome steed parked on the public highway and not a sniff of any scrotes.

Admittedly i was weaponised with half a dozen beigels from brick lane and a slab of cheesecake which when thrown can break a limb on contact.

I have a Shotgun rack on my GS fastened to the pannier rack.

Unfortunately being as it is a breakdown case I would have to ask the scrotes to stop whilst I removed all the straps and locks from it then wait a bit longer whilst I rebuilt the gun then a bit longer still as I get the shell's from the top box and load it but I reckon I could be ready to rock and roll with them within 15 mins of the attempted jacking.

This would only work if I was jacked around 9am on a Sunday morning on my way to a clay shoot though and I was dealing with the world's most courteous and patient jackers.
