Maybe it's a little disappointing that it's taken you and (only) your GS owning mates a while to realise that some protection is better than none. But hey, that's the joy of bikermate living; every day, something new.
No its a little disappointing that thieves have been allowed to become an epidemic in some cities.
Not all my mates have been riding all their lives with the wisdom that carries with it.
A lot of my mates are very wealthy 'born again bikers' or have just started this as a hobby pass-time. Naive yes, but prepared to do something at least.
But unless this issue is noted as a real and present threat, by TALKING ABOUT IT, then they are vulnerable to risk in a rapidly changing environment, that they were not aware of.
It's an education thing as well.
The Insurance Companies just say 'use the steering lock' not because it's useful, but because it shows intent to steal if smashed.... Like breaking and entering is shown by a smashed window, not an unlocked one.
YouTube is like a country wide Open University for thieves. They just learn skills and tactics from the internet. So the evil spreads really fast.
