Wear 'n' Tear or Warranty Claim?

There is a parallel to be drawn here with Mercedes. In earlier years they were seen as pure quality with bullet proof engineering. Then the accountants had a hand in things and the quality went downhill, rusty wings, poor paint etc.

Sales suffered and management had to call a stop to that and reinstate the quality.

BMW need to sort themselves out.

Fix my useless heated grips !

Unfortunately for us, regardless of the diminishing build quality of our beloved bikes, BMW have just posted record sales figures for the first three months of 2015.
This will undoubtedly justify in the bean counters own minds the validity of their cost cutting program (if indeed there is one).

Dealer has photographed the offending parts! Found a few more than was first thought. Report going off to BMW, sit back wait and see what's to be done about it all :tigger

The hexhead GSA has so many parts made in expensive ways but are no better for being done that way. If the LC is similar BMW could save a fortune by simply looking at the whole bike Esther than, as it appears, seeing it as a collection of smaller projects.

Also had a visit to the dealers for the same reason, engine and swing arm, now we wait for BMW to come back, dealer did mention that BMW asked them this week if they were getting many complaints about corrosion and was it affecting sales, maybe the costs of replacing engines is starting to count.

I did notice that the GSA is painted black, does anyone know if that's a better paint or just a different colour of the same poor finish.

BMW has been visiting several dealers this week to discuss corrosion issues, so watch this space. They are aware that this is a big problem.

Had a call from my dealer yesterday, engine is going to be replaced under warranty due to corrosion, took it in 2 weeks ago today so i'm now happier.

I am the second owner, owned it from 3 months old 2700 miles on it.

Used all year round for pleasure and holidays never used in the salt though. Its a 63 plate 14 model with 14800 miles on it.

List of things i've had under warranty

New front shock (original leaked after about 8000 miles)

New water pump (original leaked after about 7000 miles)

New rubber boot over rear drive (worn through after about 10000 miles)

Starter motor worked loose and dribbled oil (about 5000 miles)

Recalls for battery and side stand switch

Heated grips are shit :-) but not replaced

Would i buy another one............................ NO

Still think the gearbox is not brilliant and the heated grips are crap, but is there a perfect bike out there? Maybe a KTM ?

Do i love the bike ................... YES

Shame really its a great bike but once the warranty runs out i have a decision to make

Write to BMW customer service with that list of faults and point out your disappointment in the product. Its not unknown for them to offer to extend the warranty.

Finally BMW will replace the Engine, Rear Drive and will inspect the Frame once the engine is out, if needs be, they will replace the Frame too ........

I take it that a new V5 will be issued due to the engine replacement?

Anyone who's had a similar problem get any kick back from BMW as way of apology/compensation?

That'll be up to you to inform DVLA if the engine number changes

Well it's been 6 months with the new engine!

Back to dealers today, replacement engine is starting to go the same way as the previous one :tosser

BMW need to re-think the paint finish on the engine and frames and do it fast! - my first LC had a couple of small spots on the engine that never got any worse so I ignored them, however the final drive was far worse so that was replaced under warranty. My current LC has survived almost a year and 10,000 miles without any issues but I have been scrupulous with cleaning and protecting with FS365 and ACF50.

My 14 plate GS went the same way. BMW offered to sort it out for free, but also offered 2K off any bike in the showroom if I wanted to change bikes. Got a ADV now.

Good luck.

Now you would think for a premium price & bike your bike should be flawless, I cannot see why BMW cannot seem to get it right like the cars ? I have a 2011 GSA here and I must admit I have not inspected as yet, but after reading this I may have a look, I have loads of jap bikes and as in the previous thread the bikes have been reliable and rust free, even tho I use them all year round and wash them off once in a while and still they have been reliable

Having a new one sitting in the shed now I'm starting to lose a little bit of confidence...its been covered in ACF50, I guess I will keep an eye on it. The new KTM looks mega though..

If BMW don't get their act together then I might be forced to buy a boring dull bike like a Honda Africa Twin next time around :D
