Wearing Police Hi-Viz jacket?

Goodness, if you feel this strongly about people who wear yellow jackets on their bikes, I dread to think how you feel about folk who still wear shellsuits.

They have IQ's in single figures, they are football supporters, they drink Carling, drive a Vauxhall (probably a Corsa), and a waste of the Air required to keep them breathing.

Don't you just love intolerance in action ? :hide

If I understand Bowser correctly, wearing day-glo makes you an anally retentive knob ? I hadn't realised that that was a fact rather than his opinion:ronno

Sorry but thats just the way it is, it's whats called a conclusive presumption or irrebuttable presumption (In English law, a conclusive presumption is a presumption of law that cannot be rebutted by evidence and must be taken to be the case whatever the evidence to the contrary.) I would like it to be my opinion but unfortunaly it is as I say an irrebuttable fact; sorry. Wearing a yellow jacket out of choice does make you a knob.

Yes I know it makes me look like a knob, but I do wear hi-viz most of the time. The turning point for me was while laying in the road trapped under my bike praying that the next car to come round the bend was paying attention.

Luckily he was, but only a few moments later some dickhead nearly went into the back of the ambulance they were loading me into. And you can't get much more hi-viz than a frigging ambulance. I guess that shows that nothing can save you from a dickhead in a fast car but its worth trying anything that will give you an edge...

Exactly what Bowser was saying about Hi-Viz and target fixation...:rob

I only started biking again last in May 2010. Bought a wee ER5 to give myself a taster and when I bought it, I bought a Hein Gericke Dayglow Jacket as it was used mostly for commuting. Bought a new XJ6 Diversion in July 2010, did my Bikesafe in Feb 11, joined the IAM in Apr 11 and passed my IAM Test in Sept 11. Then sold the XJ6 and bought the RT.

When I bought my Dayglow Jacket back in May 2010, didn't think for one minute that folk out there would think that I was a 'Knob' for wearing it. It was a personal choice, main reason for buying it was simply to make me more visible during my ride to/from work.

Don't get me wrong, SMIDSY's have still pulled out in front of me but hey ho, as someone has said already, it's all about riding defensively.

Each to their own, I don't look at folk not wearing high-viz and think that they're a knob, I simply think they're another biker and give them a nod.

Perhaps if the police wore all black you'd have known 6 colleagues that'd been T boned.
:popcorn

Well Tim we used to wear all black in them thar far off golden days pre 'Health & Safety' and none of us, as I remember, were T boned :rob

:D :D

I don't wear one on my own bike, like Micky I'd sort of rather be a bit grey and fly under the radar ....

Love to buy you a pint sometime Giles :thumb

Brilliant. Nothing more to say.

wow...

I was kinda regretting posting my original comment, but now I don't at all...

It's really shown an interesting patchwork of personalities of the GS riders that make up this forum.

And I think differences are worth celebrating, if we all liked the same stuff, thought the same way, dreamed the same dream... how fcuking boring would that be.

Cheers.

Well it just goes to prove that wearing Hi Viz is extremely dangerous so hats off to the Dayglo Dereks for taking that risk:bow

For some rather wound-up folk it is a real Marmite issue :D

I can't say it bothers me whether someone does or does not wear it. I don't judge by appearances. I choose not to wear it and couldn't care less what someone else thinks of the personal decisions I make any more than I care about the personal decisions they make.

That some make judgements and get so emotional about such a trivial things like what someone else wears makes you wonder what they behave like over things which directly affect them and/or are really important :blast Their blood pressures and heart rates must be permanently through the roof

Although Bowser's response did make me chuckle. :)

Reinforces the fact that riding a bike - even one of the same maker or even marque, means absolutely nothing in terms of common identies or views on riding.

Just to poke the fire a tad more..... I went on a Bikesafe course and the old bill said Hi-Viz is worthless and to not bother with it. If they cant see the bike then they cant see you on it either, regardless of day-glow green/yellow vest and day/night.

IMO it's WORSE than useless.....a positive danger in fact.

You don't carry an inch of cold water in a cup in the same way as you do a brimmed mug of boiling water......
When the new gen parachutes came out in the late 70s and early 80s, they were much safer and far more reliable.....the accident/death rate stayed the same though, because as people felt safer, they started showing off more, doing more stunts and leaving deployment until later.

Driving with a spike on your steering column rather than a big fluffy airbag? You'd drive a LOT more carefully wouldn't you.

It's called 'Risk compensation', and we all do it, even if subconsciously.

So what have we got here, with 'Hi Vis'?

1) Target fixation that increases the chances of being run into probably as much as it increases the chance of you being seen
2) Risk compensation
3) Looking like a penis.

I don't give a toss about point 3......if you're a six foot four fat ginger bloke, believe me, you'll understand why...

I ride in kit that's as comfortable and that will protect me as much as possible against impact and abrasion, but i know how much it still hurts in an accident and have the scars and broken bones of experience that remove the 'risk compensation' factor from that to a degree.......
I also wear black or dark grey clothing because it's practical and makes me feel invisible....I would prefer to feel as totally invisible as possible on my bike, and I ride accordingly.

That car at the junction coming up?
He hasn't seen me, he WILL do the worst possible thing that he can, and I will ride so WHATEVER he does, it won't affect me.

Those two vehicles I'm about to pass between on the motorway?
They definitely haven't seen me, so I'm going to pass whilst accelerating quickly enough to be beyond them before they can move, and I will have a plan where to go if they both do the most stupid thing possible, which is likely.

The car behind me when I'm coming to a halt at red lights?
He won't see me, so I will leave a car space inbetween me and the guy in front and won't get out of gear until I've seen the guy behind come to a halt......that way, I can accelerate out of the way alongside the guy in front so he is the one hit, not me.

Ride like you're invisible, feel like you are invisible AND people are out to get you and you'll survive....wear hi vis and feel even the slightest bit safer and you won't.

:rob

I've said all i'm going to, on previous long running threads.
I'll just point anyone who still has the will to live :D to;

oh - and just for devilment; :green gri

Brilliant, well done everyone, hours of fun.

Still sniggering to myself whilst walking the dogs on the beach. Everyone else gave me a wide berth, must have thought I was a nutter or something !

Hi-Viz is just soooooooooooo utterly gay :D
