I'm working on getting a website built for my little Stone Fireplace company.

Out of the blue, a company called this week saying they could guarantee top listing (as in top of search page) on all search engines, including Google.

It costs £500 squid, and then £300 per annum.

Included in that price is construction of your website if required. (so essentially free)

See them at www.zeotekinternational.com

I tried some searches on some of the companies in their portfolio, and it seems to work.

I'm just a bit suspicious, as 'top listing' is pretty desirable, and for that it seems cheap.

Anyone heard of them, used them, have any ideas?

Input appreciated

Will

Ignore.... Getting on top of the Google listing involves other websites linking to yours. The more that link, the more popular they are, the higher your ranking is.

Not rocket science. There's 1000's of these folks who claim to to get you better ranking.

My Smugmug photo web page has got top listing in Google if you type my name in, which I thought it was cool :)

Googling for Whatton returned this as the top link!

Willstatt: don't bother. You'll end up getting spammed to ferk as any email address on the site will be harvested by web-bots.

If you find a genuine enquiry amongst the spam it will probably be from JimBob in Wisconsin.

How many customers a year will you need? Not many I would have thought. Most (good) building tradespeople I know have more work than they can cope with through referrals. Do you really need a website to attract business?

No, thats my nickname, my real names Johnny Wadd :)

Will, another way of getting an immediate high google ranking is to use a hosting provider without your own domain name.

Example is Whattons smugmug address. It's smugmug that gets the high ranking, therefore all people using that URL get it as well.

If you want your own domain name, then the process will take a bit longer, since it takes time for search engine bots to index. And you need to contact websites and ask them to link to yours.

I entirely disagree with the above. I'm a self employed draughtsman and the within the first six months I registered a domain and set up a simple website. If you search using draughting and the type of detailing I carry out my website comes at the top of the google listings.

This has been noticed not only by various other design houses who I talk to now and again but also numerous contractors desperate for a draughtsman. This means, to a degree, I get to pick and choose the work I do and turn many away due to being too busy.

The trick to getting top of the listing is, as Mike W says above, linking to other websites. I have a dedicated page of links to the various industry associations and manufacturers. This keeps the little google bots busy and, I assume happy. I also registered with various search engines at the start after which you have to be patient - six months before I could find it. Not sure how long before I noticed I was at the top.

As for spam. It's nowhere near as bad as I thought it might be and every time I get junk I just set up Outlook to throw it straight in the deleted items folder.

Unless you're desperate for new work via the net I would skip paying someone, create the website and once it's uploaded, register with as many search engines as possible - this used to be free but I think they may charge now.

HTH

Adam :)
