weird bearing feeling ???

Im in the middle of rebuilding the 650 (800) after a winter clean, Whilst cleaning the rear wheel I checked the bearings, There is no noise or crunching but there is something ive never felt on a rear wheel bearing before.
There is a definite notch, just one notch on a full rotation of the bearing, this is on BOTH bearings. Just one notch each side, it feels like knackered head bearings but its on a rear wheel ???
Obviously I am going to change them but I was wondering if anyone has had the same symptoms..Bloody weird
Motorworks here I come again, still haven't fitted the rocker gasket yet...

Had one set collapse whilst riding on my first 2008 800gs at 30,000 miles still good when I sold at 40,000 miles I do ride all winter on the s****y roads in the dales. I replaced the rear bearings on my current 2010 800gs at 25,000 which felt notchy I have also changed the fronts as a precaution. BMW use chocolate bearings nowadays, but once you know how they are not hard to change and if you use bearing suppliers, not dealers , they can supply cheap good quality bearings. I will now see how much longer they last but I will change every 2 years as a precaution.

Apparently the oem bearings is a common failure on these bikes. There's a big thread on it on ADVrider about it. Having said that, I'm on almost 56k miles, had it since 27k miles and never replaced the bearings, I check every time I have the wheel off. They may still be factory unless previous owner changed them. Deffo sounds like yours are going. Good that you noticed them before complete failure. Simply earrings is where I got my SKG bearings, (spares for a trip), they're great value. Don't forget to order the seals.

Change the bearings on both wheels.I've done the same for peace of mind when my bike had only 9000mls on the clock at my own cost (The rear wheel bearings felt a bit strange)as it doesn't cost much and check them at every tire change.No problems since.Bike is gone now but I can sleep well as I know I've done the best for me and the new owner.

And, Tosh, while you are about it, change for both wheels, and put sealed (watertight) ones in. Double security, water/rust causes most problems. greetz hans

Do yourself a favour...... Measure the bearings, that's if you can't find the numbers either on the old bearings or using google search, and purchase your new ones from here:-

If you can't find the numbers, measure the old bearings and give me the dimensions, I can identify the numbers for you.

Tip: When any new ****-2RS bearing is opened from the packaging, gently prise the seal out using a feeler gauge blade, at the point of the inner lip and then add more grease into the ball race. The seal can then be pressed back in to position. This will prolong bearing life.

(****= bearing number, -2RS= two rubber seals)

I replaced the bearings on my 800 last year, remember, you need three bearings for the rear, two on the wheel and one for the sprocket carrier.

Took my 800 into Balderstons for new tyres yesterday, done 25k and bearings in both wheels were f*uked! they rang BMW as I have extended warranty but bearings are a consumable item, BM agreed to replace them anyway and the mechanic made sure I had the latest bearings put in

OK my bike has done 25k in just over two years but BM`s are supposed to do a lot of miles aren`t they? can`t fault Balderstons as they didn`t have all the parts yesterday so they lent me a R1200 RT to get home and back today, now I want a 1200 as well, electric screen and heated seat = toasty even though it`s 1c+ today.

Get sealed (not shielded) bearings and use the original seals as well.

If you add grease always leave 50% free space to allow the grease room to move. If its packed solid, the bearing can heat up and spew the grease out.
