My GS is the first bike I've had with ABS, it's got the new EVO system.

Sometimes while stationary and holding the front brake on, there's a strange feeling like the back end is rising slightly on the suspension, almost as if someone has gently rolled into the bike from behind.

Is this normal, and what causes it?

Had the same feeling on a 2002 ABS model but when I looked round a nice lady had rolled gently into the back of me ...and popped the numberplate off!

Stupid bitch.

Sorry, couldn't resist that one.

Because the front level operates both front and rear brakes, the suspension can't return to its normal settled position. The wheelbase changes as suspension compresses - the lower the bike (i.e. the more compressed the suspension), the shorter the wheelbase.

As an example of how this works, try standing astride your bike with little or no weight on the seat, pulling the front brake lever reasonably hard, then sitting down on the bike. Result: "locked" suspension. When you release the brake, the bike will settle down - sometimes quite dramatically!

My diagnosis of your symptoms are that the brake is hard enough on to prevent the bike finding its settled position. As you sit at the lights (or wherever) you gradually release the pressure on the brake lever, partially or fully, and the bikes adjusts itself.

Robin.

2003 EVO 3 Brakes

My mate has a 2003 GS with evo 3 ABS brakes and it does exactly the same as yours, rises quite noticably when at a standstill, so "normal " is the diagnosis, by god they are good brakes though.
