Good morning everyone, I have discovered yesterday that my 2014 GS is not displaying all the gears onto the dash(which in it sl f is more of an annoyance than an issue) but when I have tried to put in in 6th gear the bike feels like going in a sort of limp mode, engine stuck a 4K rpm and not going anywhere..
Back to 5th and all is good(you except for the display).
Has something similar happened to anyone before?
2014 GS almost 35.000 miles .

Cheers

When my 2016, dropped into limp mode, you knew it!!!

orange triangle on the dash, exclamation mark, and stuck at 3K revs...

If its triggered a limp home event, even if it clears it will be stuck in the electronics until cleared !

what options do you have ? Quick shift or clutch shifts?

If you park it, engine off and go through the gears , will it get to 6th and does it show on the display?

There is nothing on the dash except the missing numbers..
I can not got further than 3rd with the engine off , engine one can change the all gears, but the number are either missing,3,4,5 , miss matched 2 in now the Neutral and to see the number 6 I have to hold the gear pedal up..
The mystery is getting even weirder..

Does the GS have a limiter in the ECU so that the bike cannot be overrevved in neutral ?

Just wondering if the gear box switch is playing up and not displaying that the bike is in 6th gear perhaps it thinks it is in neutral

Pretty sure if you load the gear lever and turn the rear wheel (engine off!!) you can step through all the gears

The purpose was to see,

A can you get the bike into sixth and will the wheel turn
B Does the indicator show 6 on the Kombi

if you cant get it into 6th, suggests the gearbox is at fault

if it goes into 6th but the display says not, would suggest the sensor

Just my half penneth

Not as far as I know, revved the bike up more than once in neutral on the stand..

Sounds like there is an excessive disparity between what speed the bike thinks it is travelling at, from the ABS sensor, & the speed it calculates when comparing revs with gear position. Well that's my theory FWIW.

This leads me to the same conclusion as others, that this is likely to be the gear position sensor. There is huge commonality across the BMW range: -

I guess it may be worth checking the potentiometer & attendant wiring for corrosion or water ingress, but I suspect replacement will be the only option - c. £107 from Motorworks.

Thank you for that..

Little update for whoever is following the saga
1st gear works as intended.
2nd think to be Neutral.
3rd no show on the screen, decelerate when twisting accelerator and accelerate when closing accelerator.
4th sometimes shows on the dash the other it doesn't,works kind of ok
5th works as intended.
6th has gone away on holidays..
Booked into the dealer for next week,in the meantime I will go back in time and use something called a bicycle..🤔🤔

If you have a Gs911, pretty sure you can do a gear sensor adaptation reset
