1150 adv. small u shaped bracket on frame holding silencer on snapped off. not sure what to dissconnect? is it ok just to disconnect the battery or do you have to unplug anything else before welding just to be on the safe side ??

As a bare minimum if I were to weld my bike, I would disconnect the battery, unplug the ECU and if I can find any wiring to the ABS unit that would be disconnected too.

Let us know how you get on.

Just take the whole rear subframe off, to weld up...................then you'll have no worries with 'goosing' the electrics, by doing it remotely :thumb

isnt that a bit of a job? vines say just isolate both terminals on batt and tape up. i am not too happy with that . wot do you think is minimum i need to do. murr.

I had to weld mine. I unplugged the Battery and any other connection I could find. Earthed the equipment through the header pipes. Nothing got toasted.

When I did welding on mine, I just disconnected the batt, nothing else and all was fine...

Why not get it gas welded ? No need to disconnect anything and it will have to be painted after anyway :rob

Gas welding is a bit of a no no these days, unless you want to braze it.Far to much heat needed over far to great an area.

ANY electric welding, disconnect everything you can get at,battery, ecu, abs and anything else that seems to be electrical. It's a lot easier to reconnect them all again, than it is to replace them. Also, have the earth lead,as close to the point you are welding as well. Finally, mind out for spatter burns(all the little bits that fly about when you start welding)You'd be amazed at how far those bits go,so cover all paint and plastic that you don't want burning.

 Try a smaller nozzel  Job could have been done and finished whilst your messing around removing the Fuel tank and disconnecting every little thing.
Still if you havn't got the equipment or can't gas weld theres not a lot of choice.

mine came off too in Peru.....did not wanna risk any electric arc welding, mig, etc so i had it Gas welded....a lot of people said it would not be strong enough but it is, even after taking it off road.

The choice is yours mate, good luck.

Gas welding is just as good as any other sort of welding, the only reason it will break,is if it wasn't done properly in the first place.I've seen some horrendous efforts in my time, all done by "expert" welders(ie,they got a kit for christmas)

It doesn't matter what size nozzle you use,it's still going to take you 8-10 times longer to weld the braket on with gas, than it will with electric. The HAZ on gas is far more widespread than with electric as well.Longer to heat up,longer to cool down.

re brazing

Brazing is stronger than the parent metal if done correctly.

If you are concerned about heat conduction through the frame members, semi submerge it in a tub of water, leaving exposed only the area to be welded/brazed. This should reduce conduction considerably. No earthing to worry about and may actually result in less damage to applied surface coatings caused by conducted heat.
Can also do similar with applications of wet rags if done in situ. Having a mate to assist can be helpful for this. (a friend. Not the spouse, which could see you wearing the said frame).

Makes you wonder how they ever made anything before electric welding / brazing doesn't it?
Those Norton Featherbed frames will never last!
