Well i should have expected it!

No motor bike will go through a british winter unscathed, with the amount of salt we put on our roads.Jap bikes are just as bad! My 1200 is no worse than any bike I've had, in fact with a spray of WD40 after every wash It's been fine......... so far:thumb2

I agree that nuts / bolts will suffer through winter use , but i wouldnt expect coated (powder coated or whatever BMW use on engines and casings)items to suffer after only 10 months, the bike has been washed of and cleaned on a regular basis, not abused.

I can only assume that the preparation of the said items isnt upto much prior to the coating being applied.

Maybe washing them is the problem.

I worked on Commando Helicopter Squadrons and we washed helicopters down with WD40.

With all my bikes I rarely ever wash them. Instead I just spray them with WD40 and wipe away the accumulated dirt. When the bike gets dirty again I just use more WD40 and rags. Never had any corrosion problems on any bikes I have ever owned. On my 07 GS I used WD40 from day one (along with a fender extender) and over the past few years also use ACF50. Only corrosion is some minor stuff on H&B Engine bars mounting points.

My 08 has done 24k miles through 2 winters of commuting in my ownership.

No corrosion at all. Fender extender on the front mudguard. ACF50 in November and not cleaned properly till March apart from maybe a couple of quick goings over with a sponge.

Gave it a good seeing too this weekend on the cleaning front and am amazed at how well it still cleans up for a 24k mile commuter bike. None of my previous Jap, British, Italian bikes have faired anywhere near as well in the past.

Apart from a warped front disc early on and a leaky final drive seal at 18k miles it's been absolutely fault free. Little bit of wear where my boot rubs the frame and thats it. Touch wood

The best built bike I've owned in over 34 years of motorcycling.... So far.

I usually run my bikes up to 20k miles in two years and sell em but it looks like this one will stay with me well past the 40k barrier:clap. Assuming I don't get hit hard by the "need a new bike itch" any time soon and I don't find a "can't resist bargain" when browsing Motorcycle News classifieds under GS twin cam, Multistrader or Tiger 1050.

So, you ride in the winter, didn't bother to ACF50 it despite all the advice on here, and then moan about the corrosion?:nenau

Good one!:blast

I totally agree... 'Greasy' is good for bikes (I use Duck Oil).

Water and detergent isn't good for bikes, and as long as the bike's oily enough, corrosion will be kept at bay.

Obsessive cleanliness seems to be part of the 1200 mindset, as does the continual reporting of corrosion problems.

Maybe the two are somehow related
