Well rugged flat pack BBQ fits panniers

With all due credit to Andy Cole :bow I am sooooo pleased to announce my latest gizmo :D

Me and Andy have been gibbering for sometime now about all things from BBQ`s to tables and he recently sent me a cornflake box but, cunningly, when all put together became a BBQ! Obviously, the first time I tried it it caught fire and I now need new curtains :blast

Anyway, with a little design flair, £250,000 worth of laser cutting tackle and copious amounts of alcohol I have come up with..................... (drum roll)...............

a>

Bugger me, I need help as my gear still `does it for me` when I see it :drool

Here it is with the mesh fitted if you don`t just want to burn kebabs

a>

And here it is flatpacked

All credit to Andy here :bow as without his idea I would not come up with this (he gets one free:thumb2) but with all my gear it is:

1. So robust you can kick it round you estate and it will still work.
2. Made from stainless steel (apart from the grill mesh)
3. Over engineered until my eyes bled.
4. Hand finished and signed by Me :cool

The flatpack idea is brill as it fits inside your panniers (GS and GSA) and WILL NOT break, bend, fall to bits or do anything else which we have come oh so used to in this world of making mass produced stuff as cheaply as possible. Clean it with a jetwash and/or a huge wire brush and it will still be brill.

So, at this stage what I need is a) all due credit to Andy for such a brill idea and b) an idea of who might be interested?

I`ll be down at the hog roast testing it out so look for the tent on fire!

Regards to all,

Mark Hooton

P.S. Price depends on attitude :bounce1
P.P.S. Thanks for all the feedback on the crud catchers, I am sincerely pleased they have gone down so well with everyone.

That's awesome! something I have been looking for for ages - just jealous I didn't make one myself (there again I haven't got a laser cutter or any stainless come to think of it!)

Update

Fellow Tossers, thanks for the prompt feedback - at least some of you who know me know I don`t just do this for the dosh (I do have a day job and I DON`T have any time on my hands!) so the feedback (including the taking of the p*ss) is very much appreciated :comfort

Today I spent painting my house when I really wanted to be on with the evolution of this work of art from idea (all credit to Andy Cole :bow) to hunk of non ferrous raw sex on a stick :drool (sorry for overdoing it there).

But anyway, here`s an update (of sorts)

1. Yes, I`ll logo it up for the Tossers who ride all other marques (I have been told God rides an 1150.............?)

2. Availability - at this time about a week or so as I need to `de engineer` it. Not because I want to take quality out (Thats what China and people who don`t care do) but I do beleive I can make it lighter without compromising the feature of being able to kick the sh*t out of it and it still works! (those damn OCD GSA Tossers have soooooooo much to answer for)

3. Price - god knows at this time. It takes a long time to hand finish this (you need to `feel` it to know what I mean) to get the all over smooth edges and the feeling of near sexual fulfilment as it slides together as if greased - this can be expensive and I don`t want it to be. Wet finger in the air and I think circa £69.99/£79.99 plus p&p for something which will possibly outlive you unless you take a flame cutter or smelting works to it. I haven`t done the calcs yet but based on the crud catcher the price estimated seems consistant, value for money and fair for the craftsmanship involved. How does that sound? I`ll have a better idea later next week and to be fair I could be miles out :nenau

So, hope this helps, once again I should be testing it at the Hogroast but if you see my tent on fire DON`T BUY ONE :D

Road test

Yep, with pleasure. I`ll put it to task and let everyone know with pictures. I won`t bullshit because the first client who buys one will blow holes in what, to date, is a fairly good reputation.

Mark, that looks fabulous. Looking at the mesh, does it slot into the half circles on the edges? If not, is there a way to make some slots so that the mesh is locked in, rather than just sitting on the edge.

Being a clumsy numpty, I'm likely to knock the mesh while reaching for a beer and can see the whole lot sliding into the coals, leading to a beating from whoever I'm cooking for.

Just a thought.

Oh, and there are stainless steel grills available in the US but they're probably more than you'd charge for the whole bbq.

i always wondered what happened to andy cole when he left united.you would have thought he would he would have made enough money in his footballing career, not to have to take up welding in later life.

Footballers, eh?

Yeah, footballers eh? Who would have thought?

Anyway, yes the next prototype will actually have wee slots in it to hold the mesh safe and secure as I would have the same issue with my wine glass. I have already thought of this but it isn`t seen on the prototype images.

I may choose to use `expanamet` in anycase as it may be stronger than the mesh shown which, if you put your mind to it you can bend it. And yes, stainless mesh is very very expensive in comparison but i may have no choise if I want to always produce the best I possibly can but not at Touratech prices (oh, those cheeky rascals).

Purpose

By the way, for me it`s just as much a work of art as it is something you can cook your bangers on, kick to death, drag around Russia and still see it work.

Don't do the --.99 thing...we're alledgedly adults.

£70 - £80 whilst initially frightening is cool for a bullet-proof bit of bespoke kit.

PS: You better catch me at the start of a month though...for financial reasons..

Soz

Yeah, sorry about that - every now and then my day job creeps in :nenau

I`ll do a proper costing next week and I`ll post it so that everyone has a definative price to consider.

Day job to one side the price range seems about right

Would it be an idea to have a lower grid, too?

Most BBQ's have a lower grid for the coals to sit on, helping the airflow considerably.

It wouldn't add to the bulk too much.

===

The real trick would be to make a mini version of one of Webber BBQ starter chimneys, to go with it.

On a camping holiday in France I made one out of an old catering bean tin I found at the back of a restaurant (classy, I know) which worked a treat.

...but it didn't have R1200GS laser-cut into it, did it!

:rob

Agree with Wapping re: the lower level... there are plenty of holes for airflow but could that mean a bit too much hot ash might escape upsetting those campsite owners?

I've experience with one of these folding jobbies, but wouldn't recommend - after a bit of over-exuberence with the fire lighters it had to be hammered flat again after warping with the heat. I'm guessing this piece will be of a much thicker gauge though Mark if it's anything like your other stuff... but maybe useful for design ideas?

When you have a price, I will be wanting one (with the only real engine size of 1100 on it of course:augie)

Thats good I wont have to get one, just steal yours !! hey hey what a good idea !!

I have a similar flat pack stainless firebox which I use with either wood or charcoal - the bottom grill is definitely useful to get (and keep) a good flame bed.

that other foldy thing

To be fair, that black one looks brill and I cannot fault it for the dosh however it looks like I won`t be able to kick it to death and I bet the post about it warping under heat is true. If you focus on removing cost this is what you end up with - don`t get me wrong - I aint knocking it as I think its good for the money but there has to be compromises. Also, I think it will be a bitch to clean.
