Well rugged flat pack BBQ fits panniers

Intrested in a 1100 version , not that it will be on bike but for home it would be perfect , ideal for a party of 2 by the hot tub , Most Excellent .

You may need some holes in the bottom, too, as the coals may well need to draw air in from below.

Heat rises, so having all the air holes at the top may not work 100%

Look at a conventional Webber BBQ. It has a much larger surface area, so it is easier for it to draw some cool air in. But its main air vents are all beneath the coals rack.

Looking forward to seeing it at the Hog Raost.

I like the idea of the lipped tray that doubles as an ash catcher.

I'm sure you've got too many holes in the Vee - that will mean too much heat and you'll burn everything - a classic British mistake.

BBQ coals only need to heat up, turn from black to grey and only then are they ready.

They'll sit there for a couple of hours without any air thru them heating anything up within 12" of them.

Try making one with only one hole each end :thumb

Yes, but they get a bit unstable when being towed behind a GS, especially when you hit *cough*MPH....

Evolution so far........

Hi all, I have taken notice of all the (serious) kind words of advice and have changed BBQ as follows:

1. Removed the upper mesh and replaced with slats - far more easier to clean.
2. Fitted a mesh in the bottom to hold the briquettes.
3. Drastically reduced the air holes to substantially reduce falling ash.

Putting aside the practical evolution, the damn thing also looks even sexier :drool

Here`s an image of the one which will be setting light to my tent on Saturday at Andover :D

testing so far......

Well, so far it went ok, I tested it on Satruday and the 0.9mm thickness one just bucked like the cheap shite thin mild steel ones. The 2mm thick one stood up much better but at the sacrifice of weight (over 3kg`s) but it still fits flatpacked lovely in a pannier. Cleaning the mesh was a bitch so i have dropped that for slats as mentioned.

Andover will see another test and I am hoping to have nailed the improvements so far..........

Hog roast post BBQ frenzy report!

Hi all and especially `Hi All` to all the members I met at the hogroast - I did feel a bit of a celebrity with all the welcomes once people knew who I was despite being stupid and pissed, mostly. (thats me, by the way).

Special thanks to Steve, Horse and Dave for making me feel welcome and a special mention for Dave as hell will freeze over before he gets a BBQ off me!:D It was a brill bash and even my mate, Gilly, enjoyed it despite turning up on a Honda CB1300 (albeit my Honda)

Anyway, the stainless BBQ.................. thankfully it all worked especially with the scrutiny it was under - the german sausages (bratties) cooked well and i beleive some kindly member took some very good images of it `at work`.

I am going to try to be unbasied here - any bullsh*t will soon come out in the wash. I ws pleased to hear, several times, that no-one had anything bad to say about my stuff and the `passion` I put into it is evident for all to see. Consequently I will be honest as I don`t want to taint what little reputation I have.

pros -
quality bit of kit due to the hand finishing
Will not become unusable like the cheap shit ones after a couple of goes
Looks sooooooooooooooooo horny :drool
should last a very long time
comparitively very easy to clean
Looks sooooooooooooooooo horny :drool (whoops, said that)
Comes in its own stainless box
less than 20mm when packed
fits lovely inside a pannier
very easy to put together (less than 15 seconds)

cons -
bloody heavy - the thick end of 4kg`s I think
dirty to use (yeah, I know, its a BBQ - they are all like that)
got to cary other stuff with you or buy it locally (briquettes, firelighters etc)
expensive - at £80 I think its very expensive but its not a rip off, you do get what you pay for and should outlast one a quater of the price many times over

Also, there was a tiny bit of warping on the side from the heat. Nothing to stop it from working and nothing to stop it coming apart very easily but I do need to mention it.

Overall, and trying not to be biased, its very pretty to look at and does a good job but its dirty and heavy. Would I buy one? In all honesy yes but I would not use it all the time as i would favour my peak stove for convenience.

Hope this helps!

P.S Dave - send me 3 good bottles of red plus £10 postage and I`ll send you the prototype :thumb

Welcome Back!

Fantastic stuff, can't wait to get hold of one so I can boast about our combined efforts, although I have to say it appears it was mostly inspiration from me and you have put in all the hard work!!

I have to say it does look incredibly horny - I'm starting to wonder where my sexual alignments are if I'm fancying a BBQ - could you please call it Annie so I feel better about myself and my wife is not quite so concerned...

Hi mate

Hi mate, how was the three peaks? anyway, I did actually make a 0.9mm one which warped but `pulled` back into shape when cool - I wouldn`t sell it to anybody because of this so its up to you, you can have the 0.9mm or you can have the 2mm thick one with my compliments as a thank you for the inspiration.

Its going to be somewhat very expensive to post so I might bring it down personally (time will be an issue here....), I`ll also `personalise` it with your Good Lady`s name so all is well!

Three Peaks

Happy to meet you half way one early evening if that helps - bit tight for time this end as well - either seem to be in organised leisure time or hard at work, don't get those "I wonder what I can do for the next two hours" moments any more...

Just joking about having a personalised BBQ - I think having "Annie' inscribed into a BBQ may raise more questions than it answers (especially as my wife is called Sarah!)

Would prefer to go for the heavy duty one as it will be seeing a lot of Europe with me, my mate Rich may well offer something for the thinner one though as he is also after one - how much are you looking for?

Let's just hope they sell and you can pull a few quid back as well as just looking cool!

Regards

Andy

Walked around the field several times trying to see you with the bbq, you need a flag next time :D Let us know when these are ready for production, we're interested in one. Weight is less of an issue as it'll be more of a weekend away bbq rather than a 'pack it for touring' piece of kit. At home we only have a balcony so it'll replace our current folding bbq which has seen better days.

Can you let us know what the size of it is when open and closed, ie how big is the grill area?

Cheers,

J.

Replies!

:rollDahoum - great to meet you too, please accept my apologies for being pissed and not being able to put your avatar image to the face! I am, indeed, a sad sack of sh*t at times! :) I can`t even remember you taking the images - was I there just in body perhaps

Mr Magic fingers - soz mate, I`ll do the flag thing next time but I might feel a dick (or german sausage) doing it! It was a tadge embarressing (but oh so glorious too :hug) when I mentioned who I was and had 2 geezers shake my hands, one drag me to his bike to talk `bling` and later on a great Tosser who dragged me to his topbox, not to give me a kicking but to give me a bottle of wine for my efforts! :bounce1

It nearly all made up for my mate turning up on my Honda CB1300 and I am sorry if he looked like a german porn star and ate his bratwurst with too much gusto for a grown man :roll

Back to the BBQ - I`ll sort out the sazes tomorrow, by the way `Horse` is purchasing one (of a sorts) and he is kindly going to give it a kicking and report back in an effort to help me evolve it because I can`t be right as I have only made 5 prototypes so far!

Stuff nicked

Guys, as you have possibly seen from my other thread I was broken into last night by some scum gyppo`s. Not too much damage but the pieces of sh*t stole all the high value stuff being the stainless parts I make including 2 of those BBQ`s.

One of the BBQ`s is for `HORSE` (sorry mate, more material ordered and I`ll make you another one sharpish) and I can`t remember who ordered the other one........................

Anyway, to everyone who is awaiting stuff please understand the delay, it`ll only be a matter of days before I have replaced it all - luckily I only tend to make to order so there wasn`t a lot of made stuff but they did make off with hundreds and hundreds of pounds worth of stainless raw material. B*stards.

Best regards,

Mark.
