Well rugged flat pack BBQ fits panniers

Hiya mate, thanks for that and I do hope so!

I am sure there will always be room for improvement and if I can just at least continually develop the BBQ to the advantage of other members then I am doing the right thing.

I must, however, try to do this as quickly as possible as I am being pushed by other members who wish to buy them.

I am posting yours today mate :thumb2

Please PM Dave the Driver and tell him you`ve got one for just a couple of bottles of wine as it`ll wind him up :bounce1

Best regards,

Mark.

My guess is if you're a perfectionist Mr Hooton (and you sound as if you are) you'll never be 100% happy with it. I don't mean that in a bad way, just that you will always be looking for small improvements or "tweaks" as you get feedback from users. Just call the current batch "Mark I" and as you get feedback and improve on the current design, call the next batch "Mark II" etc etc etc.

Some people will prefer a previous version - a bit like the 1150s and 1200s really :D so personally I would offer several options ie don't stop offering the Mk Is just because the Mk IIs are available, if that makes sense. Let people decide whether the tweaks in the later versions are improvements for them. :thumb2

Mmm, wisely spoken words

Mate, I take on board and accept everything you have said - the 1150/1200 preferences show that very very clearly to me.

Some members would prefer to wait, which is fine and some members are keen to (quote) "sell a kidney" (unquote) to get one. And some members (Dave the Driver) will have to wait till hell freezes over :D (only joking, Dave) :comfort.

In all honesty if they are keen to purchase despite me telling them that it is in constant development then I will sell them one. Indeed, and just to show the item to the V Strom boys (horrible bike of the devil) who I have done some work for I showed them the BBQ and it was sold in less than ten minutes!

HORSE won`t mess about so i am sure I can keep it developing and in fairness to me it`s already quite good and I`ve tested it several times including at the Andover Hogroast and it worked fine.

Nonetheless, thanks for the input :thumb2

Right then... After speaking to Mark last night. Here is the first test results of the Mark Hooton BBQ.

The bbq is probably one of the best bits of engineering ive seen for a job. I decided to test this bbq to its limit.

The building of the bbq takes 30 seconds, and the helpful instructions Mark included are helpful, but not needed after first build. Very easy to build.

I like to use wood to start my bbq`s so in with the newspaper and kindling, loaded to the top. Initial creaking from the steel as the heat sets in, on with the charcoal not briquettes. Again loaded to the top, after about 40 mins the heat had died down and on went the grill, the grill and the bbq were now extremely hot.... So on went the sausages, grill is stable design and sausages fit perfect between each slat, so they wont roll off. Sausages cooked and the grill slats lifted off, on with some more charcoal.

The sides at this point have bowed slightly, on went a baking tray and in with some peppered steaks. Again because of the design of the bbq a baking tray of the right size sits on the top just right.

About 2 hours later the bbq had cooled down enough to handle. It did prove a litlle difficult to pull apart, and the sides had discoloured from the heat.

Rinsed off the parts then decided, sod the scrubbing and straight in the dishwasher.
Once washed light wipe over with olive oil and the bbq is packed away, ready to go again.

Very slight heat marks on the sides but nothing that wont matter.

Bbq is also tough enough to stand on. I wiegh 14.5 stone and it took my wieght, Yes this bbq is heavy, but just 4 kilo`s or so is nothing when you think about the rest of the weight on a loaded gs.

The initial tests prove this bbq is a quailty piece of kit, if you want some cheap throw away bbq then dont bother hassling Mark, if you want a well built, well designed, well thought about piece of kit, then contact Mark.

Ive spoken to Mrrk on a couple of design upgrades and he is looking into them.

When packed away, i use 2 long velcro straps to keep it all togeather. Also a couple of blocks of high density foam to slot the grill slats in, so as to keep them all togeather and stop everything rattling around when in transit.

The BBQ is going to be tested this weekend in a long time test as im away for 2 nights and days, and plan to cook on it breakfast lunch and dinner.
So pictures and further testing posts shortly.

Well done Mark, True Gent and a diamond designer geezer.:thumb2

Mods

Horse, mate, thanks for this interim report. I have already modified the BBQ and replaced the large holes with much smaller slits to stop the ash from falling through as discussed.

I think we are all looking forward to the images.............
