I need to change a pinion seal and it seems to be relatively straightforward...if you have the correct tool :rolleyes:

I know some folks have made one which is fine if you can get hold of the materials and someone to machine it into some sort of shape but if you can't do that is there anywhere in the UK or Europe who can supply it ?

I found this in America and it's used for this purpose as well as the 4 wheel drive thing so I know that it's the right size :

I’ve got the tools to do it!
Pretty straightforward as you say,however if the castlated nut is tight(very tight) you will not be able to hold the unit stable enough to shift it.
Also the pinion nut is very tight and loctited .
So without a holding jig it can be more tricky than you think.
As a side issue,
I know a lot of bods only replace the main wheel bearings on these units,suggesting the rest of the unit is bulletproof.
However I’m seeing a lot more with worn out pinion nose bearings,
So a more thorough check over may be prudent

Yes, you have done one for me previously ( on the 1150 with the bottom end rebuild ) so I know I can trust your work :D
This one is on the 1150 I recently bought with only 31k miles, the gaiter was a bit damp and a good egg cup full of clean diff oil came out when I pulled it back so there's definitely a problem there but it also might just be lack of Hylomar on the threads. There's no discernable play anywhere but I don't yet have enough knowledge yet to spot an early issue unfortunately.
I have a mig welder and can knock up a holding jig and also have access to an industrial size vice in a mates garage but I don't have the proper tools.
Had initially though of sending it to you anyway but I bloody grudge giving cash to the rip off couriers who overcharge for IV postcodes.

Mines shot after 48000 mile, I think maybe the drive shaft had not been phased causing it to wear prematurely.......the U joint was also a bit notchy.......I think a jig is a necessity if you're doing the job.
Looks easy to make one with 6mm plate. I'll be stripping it back down to do come winter.

I screw in two wheel bolts into the final drive and put them in a vice which holds the final drive solid, and the vice arm raised and against the final drive so the final drive can’t spin around, and then use my impact gun to undo the nut :D

As ever, technique is about 90% of the challenge and the difference between success and disaster!

That's a simple solution!! Looks all complicated at first but once I've looked it's a simple jig, or as you say.....even simpler, thanks.
