i've been using a Nikon Coolpix 995 for a couple of years; Great camera but v.steep learning curve and I've been into photography for 30 years. It's a bit too bulky really but worked even when dropped onto concrete from waist height, though the rear display failed i was still able to use it with the LCD on top. Many cameras don't have both. For travelling I'd get a Canon Ixus; great little camera that will fit in even a T-shirt pocket.
For bargain buys, great service and processing take a look at internetcamerasdirect.co.uk, I think they are based in Hddersfield; they even give you web space to store your pix. you can even view photos taken by the camera you are interested in via a link on their site.
