Having succesfully converted my stock of cds to music files on my pc (windowsxp)
I would very much like to do the same with my collection of LP's (albums to any young people reading this!)
What connectors/software do I need, anyone done this recently who can point me in right direction?
ultimate aim is to be able to download this lot into an ipod
thanks

Hi,

Have used an older version of THIS software with good results. The version i got came with the appropriate lead to connect from your amp to the p.c. I'm sure there's plenty of similar software out there.

I used Audio Cleaning Lab, from Magix Software. Records, de-hisses, de-clicks, etc., and worked fine for me. You have to actually play the LP, of course, and record it in real time, so don't expect it to be a quick process. A couple of things you might like to consider (if you haven't already done so) include...

You'll need a soundcard on your PC that accepts stereo phono inputs at line level - either from the amplifier on your hi-fi or by connecting your turntable to a turntable amplifier. I only have a laptop with a crappy soundcard onboard and mono microphone input, so I bought an Edirol UA-1X USB external soundcard. It worked well and does the analogue/digitial conversion for you. It's only 16-bit, 44kHZ, but that seemed enough sample quality for my old vinyl. It works best when connected directly to a USB port on your PC, rather than connected to a USB adapter along with several other devices.

When recording and cleaning up, listen on headphones, not your speakers. They will expose things you might want to fix that you might miss on speakers.

Good luck! Norman

Thanks for pointers, will see what progress I can make now with this bad weather project!
