What grade oil?

As it says in the handbook, anything with an API grading better than SF is fine, and you only need concern yourself with viscosity (e.g. 10W-40 or 15W-50) at extremes of ambient temperature. Any other choice of brand, or synthetic/semi-synthetic etc is purely a matter for you and your wallet.

Possibly the more important point is to change the oil and filter regularly, as per the service schedule (and keep an eye on the level).

Perhaps..

What's the point? The stupid bastards don't read the stickies...some of them dont even know what a sticky is! :blast

You'd need a sticky telling people to read the sticky that points to the stuck permanently present thread, and STILL people would ask rather than looking in their fukking manual

Yer better off going to Asda's than ChavFords. You'll have enough left over for a bloody good breakfast.

It cost me £7.50 to change the oil in my 1150 the last time I did it. :thumb

Don't write off Halfords: I bought 5 litres of 15W/40 semi-synth car oil, ideal for my R1150GS, for a quid. Well, I did have to hand over the £15 voucher that I acquired from somewhere. API SL. Delightful purple container too, which really brightens up the garage.

You're getting a load of stick because this question is asked time and time again and it gets frustrating that people don't use the search function.

To answer you question, as of 2010 BMW recommend Castrol Power 1 racing 10W50, which is fully synthetic.

 I've had that one before, and the bottle does bring a touch of warmth to the garage, and in fact I've had many from them. It just depends what's on offer.

I hope the OP is now sorted for offers of lubrication. :thumb

What a cnut....

.. also getting a bit narked with attitude sometimes. A fair question, asked many times before and could indeed have been found in the stickies. But hell, if an honest question causes such incredulity, why flame the guy? Nothing positive and helpful to say, why speak at all?

What I do like about UKGSers though is that a helpful response is always just around the corner..

Thanks...:beerjug:

Can do it cheaper straight from my own olive grove. 3euros/litre

Wilkos are doing 10/40 semi API SL for £12. Alas the container is not that colourful

Are exporting it? The chap we normally use is grubbing up his trees after this years harvest

Just rode back to Bristol. No room for oil. If I have any room in case when I next fly to UK and am within weight limit will bring some for you. Might be in coke bottle but extra virgin.

My sister lives in Newton Abbott so I'll leave it with her for you
