Not surprised I might say, I just couldn't believe when I saw a youtube of someone taking a GSW for a test ride/review and the bike rolled off the side stand and the head cover cracked and lost oil.
These things must be so thin!
Next time I see a GSW I'll give the head cover a knuckle knock test to see how it compares with my slow R1150GS.

From his entry on FB.

Scary moment on the m8 just outside Glasgow this evening. 70mph, middle lane cruising along and bang!
Terminal final drive failure.

Managed to keep control and get to the hard shoulder to avoid being mown down.

Never seen anything like it before. Anyone had this problem?

2013 R1200GSW, 6200 miles, serviced and MOT'd by BMW motorrad East Kilbride on the 10th February 2016.

Got a link to the FB thread?

what that needs is an arm on each side.

that would sort most of the other issues that BMW have had with final drives for the past couple of decades too ;)

Too much weight and unsexy...............BMW left that behind in 1979:D

...and a lot of good it did them. ok they did sell a lot of bikes, but constant problems since.

re: sexy
new Ducati Multi Enduro has a trad swing arm.

I wonder if it was a drive shaft fail that flailed around and split the casing???????

I wonder if it was a drive shaft fail that flailed around and split the casing???????

my first thought was that something broke off internally and got between the crown and pinion, but it could be stress from something like a heavy landing?

So back to the thread title question.

1) A foreign body in the FD got trapped between the pinion gear and crown gear?

2) Pinion shaft bearing failed and the pinion gear rode up the teeth on the crown wheel until the pressure fractured the casting?
