You need therapy Mike...or is this it?

I find it very therapeutic Tim. ;)

I managed to get a shine on the rear wheel:

I can't understand how a bike with less than 1,600 miles (and the strip down bears out that mileage) can get a film of nasty stuff on it that dulls the paint so badly. Polishing the wheel, the rag turns black. That's after a clean with brake cleaner and BMW wheel cleaner.

Did you say 1600 miles? :eek
Yes. I thought that it might have had a new Motometer and the mileage not wound on but things like this;

I've never seen one of these rear mudguard retaining straps that weren't just a pile of flaking rust.

There are other areas that usually suffer and look like new.

It's not all good news though. There's something odd about the painted fairing panels. Some research is in order.

Lovely, when shall I bring my Adv down? it's just back from Bilco's Alaska trip & needs a clean, to say the least :D

It'll still look like a turd no matter how much you polish it.....:barf
Says a bloke who owns a Versy. :rolleyes:

You'll have to join the queue I'm afraid. I have an 1100RT owner from South Wales lined up once the K1 goes back to it's lucky keeper. :thumb2

I didn't but I know a (lucky) man who did. ;)

I was sure the lucky man told me when I saw him, last week, that he'd managed to drop it off the trailer. Are there any obvious marks....? :nenau

If I'd have known he'd called in he couldve got yer ears :blast
I forgot that he does that. :blast

Are you allowed to mention the panels :hide
I wasn't going to. Well not until he did.

Loads. :D

Thanks guys, I was kinda keeping that bit under wraps from the general masses...:D

By the time it re-emerges from the bat cave, no one will be able tell... ;)

Found the time to strip the upper fairing off this evening:

The condition of the frame is good, it just needs some time to get rid of 20 years of dust and a then it'll get a coat of polish.

Spent a bit more time on the rear wheel. Like some other parts it's been coated with something nasty. It needs lots of effort to remove the dull finish. The original is a gloss, it comes back up eventually:

Carried on with the cleaning and polishing;

The engine casings might not be visible once the tupperware is back on but it will be clean;

The forks, brakes and front wheel were given a strip down, clean and polish;

A most enjoyable afternoon. :)

I'm off to order a stainless axle end cap and bolt now.

Considered straightening this;

BMW-K1-51-M.jpg

It's the lower, right fairing bracket. It's twisted and bent from where the bike went over. It'll have to wait until the fairing goes back on to realign it (or replace it) as it will stress the panel if it's not straight.

K1's were nicknamed "Yoghurt Pots" in Germany because the plastics are so thin and crack or split so easily. :D

Whipped the exhaust system off to give better access to the stands and so that I can buff it up.

I'd forgotten that the Paralever pivots are the other way around to the Oil-Head Boxers. The fixed pivot is on the inside and the adjuster should have a black plastic cap on it.

I wonder how much money BMW saved by swapping the pivot pins around and not putting a plastic cap on the adjuster? :nenau
