and why does it mean that I can only get internet at 0.3 Mb?

can you give more context?

who/what is telling you this?

are you getting this from a profiling program or has your ISP told you your broadband profile is this?

its the info the exchange equipment uses to set a sync speed with your router. in your case, it looks like you have a very noisy line. probably a long way to the exchange.

Is there anything I can do about it - I'm supposed to get 3.5-7 Mb, but usually 0.3Mb is the maximum.

My neighbors don't seem to have a problem:nenau

Any benefit in changing from the lying, conniving fraudsters at BT?

BT will check the quality of your line for free and if its poor they will do something about it as long as the problem it isn't in the house then they will charge you.

If you haven't already unplug everything from the phone sockets except the router and see if you get any improvement, I know if I connected my sky box to the phone line the BB speed plumments to 0.5meg instead of 3.5meg

if this improves things then start pluging things back in one at a time till the BB plummets again and thats the bit of kit thats causing the issue

it could be poor wiring in your house. you could try removing the faceplate of the master socket and plugging the router into the test socket behind. this should eliminate all you other extensions if the wiring is correct.

it would be worth getting the line stats from your router before and after. method varies, so google for your router model line stats. the significant figure here is probably downstream attenuation. i'm no expert, but i'm expecting that to be very high, maybe 60db?

some good info here

i got a decent boost be switching to 02 as their method of profiling was more generous than BT. i'm not sure that is still the case though.

They tested the line whilst I was on the phone and sent an engineer here and to the exchange a few months ago - they said everything was fine.

Nothing else connected - not even a phone.

Are you using WiFi ?
If so, try plugging directly into the router and see what you get.
If same then can rule out interferance on the WiFi signal.

Unplug everything else from your phone sockets and plug your router into the main incoming BT master socket. If still bad then problem is outside. If that helps then your problem is inside.

If inside....
Make sure everything attached to your phone line - phone, skybox etc - has its own filter.
Buy a new filter and try changing them out, one at a time.

Borrow another laptop, ipad or something and check. make sure its not your computer at fault.

But what is profiling and why does it change?

Three calls to BT today, twice they said there was no problem (once they said is was due to 'natural disasters' in Kent) with the line, now they say there is.:nenau

On hold for the next level of support.

Just the same with the iPad and when my MacBook is connected by ethernet. Nothing else connected, not even a phone.

BT keep saying it is the 'profile' that is at fault, although nobody seems to know, or to be able to explain, what a 'profile' is.

But what is profiling and why does it change?

BT's kit adjusts your profile based on the line stats. these can change day to night (interference from street lights), or sometimes even if there's a lot of rain (crappy BT cabling).

statistics relating to your line/connection obtainable from your router.
That sounds interesting.

BT are going to 'reset' the ADSL connection and I should see an improvement in 3-4 days. Unfortunatly, I'm only in this house 6-8 times a year, mostly for a week or less and we have to go through this procedure every time.

do you switch off your router when away?

i ask because if i do that, my connection on booting up is a very much reduced connection speed.

i ring up o2, they say there's nothing wrong, shortly thereafter my speed goes back to normal. i don't know why this happens, but it has happened several times.

i never turn the router off now.

I had this discussion with BT and they said to leave the router on, so that is what I do. Maybe I should leave the computer on pinging BT.com to generate some traffic.

Connection speed now 112 kps:mad:

I think BT have a commitment to provide at least a speed of 0.5. Less than this and you can cancel.

Try going through to disconnections. This may get their attention.

the distance from the exchange does effect it but not nearly as much as people think, it is more the quality of the copper in the ground.

BT cut costs and used the cheapest wire they could get away with when telephone were all they cared about, so if you live in a 10+ year old house, you'll likely find thats the issue (vs distance)

as for generating traffic, I cant think why that would do anything, especially ping requests as those are teeny tiny data packets!

leave router on (why people turn them off is beyond me) and if they are still bad, contact BT and ask them to do a diagnostic on your line and CAB (ive had issue before and it was a improperly routed CAB box or some such)

i might be wrong, but don't think BT has any requirement regarding data, only voice.

Leave your router permanently switched on. If it is disconnected too often then the exchange thinks you are having problems and reduces the speed. The only way to get the speed up is to leave it on for two or three days.
