on the left rear foot peg hanger just above the exhaust (1100gs) there is a metal loop facing inwards what the hell is it for

Safety police - so you can't get your leg/foot/arm/head stuck in the wheel as you drive along

I've always thought it was to stop your hand inadvertently sliding down onto the hot exhaust when easing the bike onto the centre stand?
