Personally the 1290 doesn't do it for me, mostly for all the reasons Giles gave. I'm also no fan of electronic suspension so that would be a deal breaker.. But, as everyone else has said, the engines really are something else. They improve even further with a few miles on them. Mine at just under 13k now is super tractable and far smoother than v-twin has any right to be.
Mine's now in it's third winter and is used regardless of weather. I can honestly say, hand on heart, that there is still no corrosion on it apart from light surface rust on the disc bobbins which polishes out if I can be arsed. Build quality is, IMO, better than WBM and componentry is all to a very high standard.
Reliability - well, have a look in the 'tell me about' thread, loads of info there but in a nutshell I've had new discs, a collapsed oil filter and and a weep form the air box breather. All sorted under warranty with no drama.
The big thing for me and which explains why I love mine so much is how engaging the ride is. It's not something that you can put your finger on, you feel it in your soul............ I always find GS's a bit remote, they don't grab me by the short and curlies like my R does. They are tools. Very, very good tools but soulless, efficient, Teutonic tools none the less. They are easy to ride too, flattering less than perfect riding. The Katies are easy to ride, sure the electronics make sure they are if you have them switched on but they still keep you on your toes a bit more (in a good, fun way). Turn the electronics off and you'll be giggling like a mad thing...................
Worth knowing too that KTM always do good deals on out going models so if you're sold on the current model It'll be worth waiting for when the new one comes out.

I've never gone into the figures on here, like JB does (incorrectly), but could if you'd like me to?
All joking aside, I do like the bikes. I know you lot think I don't, and that I just come in here trolling, but I've ridden a few, and they are great fun.
Would I replace my GSA with one? Probably not, as that ticks all the boxes for me, for that type of bike right now. But if the reasons I've mentioned above were addressed, I'd certainly entertain the idea of having one as a second bike.
I'm changing the XR this year, so if I can find a decent dealer with a GT as a demo (there were none available when I bought the XR), and can have one for half a day, it could be an option. Don't worry just yet though!![]()



.................. Plus KTM keep discounting models, thus leaving owners with a larger cost to offload come resale time. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out..................................

PS I also realise there is no romance or soul when it comes to a maunufacturer building and selling bikes and the bottom line - people like me are a marketing man's dream![]()
