What is the best helmet to get ????

comfort and fit are everything IMHO.

I agree that a £100 helmet vs £500 helmet on the grounds of protection is virtually meaningless (unless you've got it off the back of a lorry). We have a strict legislation governing the basic minimum safety standards of helmets and thus; if it has a gold seal it should be ok.

However comfort and fit are totally different matter. I and the misses have BMW System 6 helmets but whereas mine is excellent hers starts giving her a headache after a few hours. Trouble is, how many places allow you to try a helmet on for a few hours riding. Likewise, a good fit in the summer may be a little loose in the winter or if perfect in the winter, too tight in the summer. Also, how much hair have you on your head and how often do you get it cut!!?

Its a bloody minefield! Having said some of the high end Helmet manufacturers offer a fitting service on their stands at various bike shows. So its always worth checking out a show before you go.

I completely agree that you should always where earplugs and its worth having them fitted if you can afford it. Likewise a change of screen can make a huge difference as it is mostly the wind flow around the helmet that makes the most noise! On that point always check out how sleek your new helmet to be is. Every petrussion (spelling) will cause turbulence and turbulence = noise. this is why full face helmets are usually (and I say usually) quieter than flip up ones.

Hope this helps.

As with a couple of posts ... for me the Schuberth C3 is without a doubt best value for money :thumb

But it has to fit right :)

I have a C2 and yes, it's quite quiet but not enough to dispense with the earplugs. So, if you are wearing plugs then they're all quiet !
Also I found the C2 a bit heavy.
I tried a TourX and I've never touched the C2 since......that was about 3 years ago.

Is the C3 noticeably better ?

A screen deflector can make an enormous difference too, I have the TT screen spoiler on my GSA and it keeps my helmet out of the windblast in a pocket of still air, pushing the wind blast over my head and keeping wind noise at bay.

If I raise my posture above it, the wind noise is deafening (pun intended).

Caberg?

When I got my new bike a couple of years ago, I couldn't afford a fancy helmet, but got a Caberg Zonda flip front, and I thought it'd do until I got a BMW or Schuberth. 10,000 miles later I can say it's still very comfy, not too noisy (but wear earplugs anyway), the visors work....I tried others..the Nolan flip front made me feel like I'd fastened Desperate Dan's chin on. I'd probably get another Caberg. As others have said, if it's comfy, it's the best one you!
Might not be expensive enough for some though....:augie

My Schuberth C2 is a noisy, heavy bugger. Would not dream of using it without earplugs. R1200 with Adv windscreen and winglets. (Is that what they are called, or is that for airplanes?) With or without the TT deflector does not matter much. And it was more or less the same on my old naked F650GS.

I've an early BMW full face - great comfort and quiet. Before that, Shoei - had an Arai but not (I since discovered) and Arai shaped head. Love the Neotec but can't afford one, and now have one of the smoke-damaged Schuberth C3s that Helmet City were selling off. Comfy and quiet (though the visor won't stay up above 50) but always use plugs if riding at anything over 40 mph - hearing damage is permanent and stealthy - it creeps up on you! As others have said, getting a decent fit is paramount, and though you may feel a tit spend at least 20 minutes wearing it in the shop once you've narrowed down the list. You'll knwo if there are any pinch points by then - anything that feels odd will be painful after an hour or two.

Yes + It's about 1/2lb lighter and immediately noticeable :thumb

We've just bought C3's....

Really noticeable how much lighter they are than the Multitec they replaced... the integral visor is great .... with the old multitec I could guaranteed the moment the visor was flipped up I'd get a sparrow in my eye :D

The integral sun visor stops the worry :Motomartin

I have a Schuberth S1 and an Arai Condor. Both are way too noisy to wear without earplugs. On previous bikes the Schuberth was noticably quieter than the Arai but on the GS they are pretty similar.

I find the Schuberth heavy, comfortable, well ventilated, fog free (with pinlock) but it does make looking over my shoulder for lifesavers more difficult.

Like you I was sick of the foam earplugs. I have very small ear holes and it was a struggle to fit them. I looked at custom made plugs, very expensive.
I then came across DIY ear putty. You mix two types of resin putty and fill your ear, when its set it makes a flexible plug which is a comfy fit and works 100%. They do not project and catch on the helmet lining etc.
I 100% recomend them and wish they were available before I started with Tinitis. I suffer 20 hours out of 24 with this problem, dont ride without them.
The putty kits are about £13.00 of ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MYO-mould...=UK_BOI_ProtectiveGear_RL&hash=item4d024cc551

The helmet choice is then up to you.

You haven't said which bike or screen you own. Consider a change of screen for less noise. Givi Airflow works well on the GS. If you don't like standard ear plugs get a pair custom made, any damage to your hearing is permenent!

I own a 2010 model gs1200 adv , with k & n fitted and accelerator module,

I think the BMW system 6 helmet are ok but a bit expensive !
I only bought BMW helmet from day one and 8 years in to biking with no complain :beerjug:

i have seen a few reviews on here regarding helmets .. I bought a carbon fibre bell helmet about a year ago and it seems really noisy..

i am after a new helmet now ,because i am sick of wearing ear plugs...:( i was thinking of a series 6 BMW helmet or one of the range .. anyone had one of these...whats your opinion ?

or what is the most quietest one out there ?

thanks in advance :thumb:thumb

Did you get the answer you needed?
Did you make your mind up?
Did you buy a helmet?

Will this now be THE reference thread for future helmet buyers?

BTW my Arai fits comfortably and I do use fitted ear plugs :)
