What is the propose of the hexagonal bolt that is in the bottom of the forks?

In my forks I can rotate the bolts but nothing happens. they don’t seem to get tighter. is the normal?

yep because they are bolted into the bottom of the damper inside the forks and they can turn, you need a special tool (or make one) you put it in the end of the fork and it stops the damper rod turning so that you can remove the bolt.
You can either get the right tool or use a bit of steel rod the right lenght with the right size nut welded on the end to do the same job.
Or what I do it put a broom handle down the end and that holds it just enough that if you use a windy gun on the bolt it will come out just fine, then it goes back in the same way.

Just read thru Antons page. Those HPN inserts look very cool. Did they work well?
If they did, how come they aren't available anymore? I thought they would sell like hotcakes.

I would have thought it would be better to know what a bolt is holding together before trying to remove it :blast:blast:blast

An air-driven impact wrench will remove them without you having to hold the inner damper rod.

Be careful when doing them up the same way, though. Use low pressure and just pinch them, then torque them up normally.

Bob.

The HPN inserts work very well, perfectly matched to an Ohlins with a # 80 spring, and 17 mm preload, and they make as much improvement as the Ohlins does at the other end.

The unladen front sits about 25 mm higher, compression damping is about half stock, rebound about 50% more, so the guys suggesting slightly stiffer Wirth springs with 5 and 15 wt fork oil either side may be on to something.

But the great advantage with them is the ability to fine tune on the fly, initially and then to compensate as the suspension fluid thins out with use - when you get things spot on the change is quite noticeable.

Part of the trouble was Mr P himself - in my experience he just wasn't interested in selling the things.

They may be still available under BMW part numbers 31 42 2 317 539 one side and ---40? the other, and a another one out for the pair, but at around twice what HPN was charging for them.
