What is this for ? on 1150gs

Hi Guys probably a silly question but what the hell is this bracket for on my 2003 1150gs it looks as though it should have a purpose but beets me what it is .

Yes behind it, I have an early 99 model it was just a wire loop on that model, so I assume a Bungee loop?

its to stop you burning your hand on the exhaust when using the footrest hangar to pull your bike up on to the centre stand

looks like somebodys hand to me the previous owner didn't have a hook on the end of his arm by any chance, did he? either that or some poor pedestrian got snagged up on it.

I always use it as a bungie hook too, but it also looks like it may be some afterthought to stop a foot going into the wheel.
