Mike O made the point earlier, but I'm pretty impressed with Garmin.
The 2610 that I normally use got me out of deep mire last month when Hurricane Charley caused my airline to dump me in Baltimore and my loved ones in Charlotte when we all wanted to go to Orlando. Luckily, I'd loaded the 2610 with US east coast maps and was able to drive to the door of the Charlotte hotel that they were bunked at. After a 9 hour Atlantic flight and 500 miles in a hire car, the last thing that I wanted to do in a foreign country and an unfamiliar city at 2am is stop and ask the way!
While I was in the US, I picked up a Geko 201 for use on Thunderbird 7 when Green Laning. Compared with the 2610, it's a pretty basic unit (what do you expect for US$100?) but you can load waypoints and routes and it'll point you in the right direction (actually, it'll do a lot more, but doesn't have any maps).
The Geko doesn't even come with MapSource (ie the PC map management software) but as I have it, I thought I'd try loading some waypoints into the Geko. Guess what? They slid in a treat!
Top marks to Garmin!
