What Now. R 1150 GS

Well lads,

It's me again. Now the Snow has cleared I decided to go for a spin on my GS. I haven't driven it since I drove it home from Joe Duffy's after getting the last lot of work done to it. (I've sent over €600 since I got itnot even four months ago.) A run of only about two miles that day. Any way I thought it was running better then ever and engine wise to be honest it is the lads in Joe Duffy's did a great Job of the work they did. So I headed for the M50 and opened her up through the Gears. She pulled like a train through all Gears 1st 2nd ect but when I put her into 6th or E gear she rev'd out as though the clutch was slipping. I dropped a gear and went back into 6th again and he same thing happened. It bits but when you open the throttle hard it slips. Open it very slowly and it drives ok.

As the clutch had only been changed with one from Motor works by the last owner it has puzzled me. When I rang the lads in Joe Duffy's they said it sounds like the clutch is on it's way out and I'm might only be noticing it now as the bike is only now running at fully power and that the new one may not have been fit right. When I rang the lad that used to ow it he said it coouldn't be an that it slips in the lower gears first if it's going.

Any ideas on this one lads. Is there and adjustment or something that can be done or am I realy looking at another bill this time over €800.

It really takin from the ownership of this bike.

1. The clutch fluid isn't too high.
2. Your handguard isn't fouling the clutch lever at speed.

I'll check them tomorrow Timolgra. I think I can count out number two as I went faster in fifth gear then I did in six to check it and all was fine, I'll check the clutch fluid tomorrow.

Anyone else any ideas. Fell free to add them so I can count everything out before sending her back in.

Did the previous owner replace the complete clutch unit, or just the friction plate as he knew he'd be selling it.

If he replaced just the friction plate it will start to slip again in the very near future. Which is now for you.

And it will slip in higher gears first as you've found out.

Or lets look at it another way. Why did the previous owner replace the clutch, and what was the mileage. Could it be an oil leak from the crank/gearbox seals.

The lad I bought it off wasn't planning on selling her I asked him to and he agreed only after he saw I was selling my Impreza. I think he replaced only the friction plate. It has only just over 10,000 miles on it at the minute. She's an MY00 so i'm beginning to wonder if thats even true with the amount of work I've had to do since I got it.

Could it be that the clutch slave cylinder has sprung a leak
and contaminated the friction plate.
Happened to me a few years ago and it ruined a perfectly good clutch.

Strip it - and while you're in there, put a new clutch in as well.

And double check that the gearbox oil seal hasn't failed (as most of them do at some point).

More doom and gloom, I'm afraid.

Would she hold out for a while if I didn't use the E gear seen as she is only slipping in that gear?

Just don't have the cash for a big job at the minute but woud like to get the fish dash done before I head off in Feb. I'll get it fixed then when I get back in a few months.

I have been riding mine for several months with what sounds like the same symptoms as you describe Eric so I reckon you could get away with it alright. Depends on how bad it is though.

I could ride along in top gear at about 80mph, but if I cracked open the throttle the clutch would slip. In the lower gears I could ride pretty much as normal, but if I dropped a gear and wound her on to pass a truck or car I would get slip too.

New clutch being ordered tomorrow, and fitted next weekend.

It's as you say, I can drive it in all gears no problem except for sixth which is drive able with out slipping as long as I don't crack it open.

Keep the faith Eric. Perhaps it might be an idea to ring Mark in Platnium Motorcycles. I havn't hear many reports on him but he's out in Bray and is ex Maddock. Worth giving him a ring and getting a price for the stuff you might need to get done. Might be cheaper. BTW, I feel your pain.

PS What colour is yours? Is it the yellow one I see a lot round Dublin Town?

I see that Yellow one around alot to. Alway down around the Joe Duffy M50round about. It has a adventure Beak fitted.
