Just doing an oil and filter change on my new aquistion.. an 1100 in red and white.. '98 vintage with 46000 miles....

doing a search indicates 20/50... but I couldn't get any tonight... Got about 4 litres of Castrol GP 10/40 in the garage, Will that do or do I go out on an oil hunt tomorrow morning?

Ta Bryn :beerjug:

for what it's worth I stuck in some 20/50 I got from B&Q for a fiver and it' been great.

But in all honesty I think as long as there something in it these engines will be fine I've attached the oil chart out of the handbook that I got off this site. hope it's of help

cheers

Thanks for the reply Roddy... may end up getting some 20/50 tomorrow.. looks like the 10/40 will only do up to 20 degrees c....

This oil question lark has been done to death and back, but I`m running my 49000 mile 1100 on Duckhams 20w50 and my 24000 mile one on Castrol GP Mineral 10/40.

1100RT though. 90,000miles+ on VW Quantum semi sythetic. About £45 for 25lts from any VAG dealership trade counter.
In fact every vehicle I run is filled with Quantum. VW call it synthetic blend!

Does oil have a shelf life then :nenau

I could get that, but as the tin box is a diesel it'd only be for the GS, and that's a lot of oil changes.......

Castrol Magnatec 10w40 semi synthetic, been using since bought @ 19k 3 years ago, now showing 56k smooth as is, change only every 6k. Not cheap @ £23 per gallon but if it saves an inter-service drain and fill...

By the sound of it I could have put 10/40 in it then... but I've settled with DuckhamsQ 20/50 this time round.. seems a bit thick though...

quantum semi synth 10w40 is fine for diesels, dave owns multiple diesels & i use it myself in mine.

i used to work at a VW independant garage & we used it in all diesels there too.

That`s what my 49000 miler is running on :thumb

On seeing the mysterious greenish shade of it through the sightglass,Roy Gardner said, 'What the hell`s that ? You`ve even got bling oil ' :D :D

That`s because it`s 20W50....
Twenty weight when cold....effectively twice as thick as 10W40 at the same temperature.......yet it`s safe to use down to -10 degrees Celcius .

Bike bought at aprox 15k, always BM serviced using 10-40 semi prior. now on 39k and always run on this. Trade £12.00 per 5 ltrs, same oil as used in our large fleet of Diesel cars and and PSVs. :thumb

I have run my 1100 on this since the 12,000 service... it's now comming up to 48,000

Morris Multivis Semi-synthetic

About £12 for 5 Litres and it's the dogs... and it's produced about 5 mile down the road from me :D

I agree totally _ I have 50K+ 1200 Bandit '98 that has run exclusively on Morris since it's 12K service. It doesn't smoke, burn oil or rattle ... unlike the average 30K one... and the last dyno run at 48K still shows it at full power. :)

It's been well ridden ,from fast scratchin' to distance touring with commuting thrown in for a good few years. Since I started using Morris never had to top up between services as the oil level hardly drops. If it's good enough for BSB and GP bikes it's good enough for me.

North/South divide

Noddy we sold/sell the GM stuff in the factors I used to work at for £7 (genuine VX oil filters £2). We bought it in for £4.50/5 litres. Had reps from 3 Vaux franchises cutting each others throats trying to sell it to us. Ian used to do the Quantum as well but they put the price up.

Mine runs fine on 10w40, 15w50 and 20w50 - standard mineral grades.

Although it seems to run a bit smoother/quieter on 20w50.

I change oil & filter at 5000 miles.

Thanks for the info :thumb I shall be having a quiet word with Autoparts next week. ;)
