Hi ,
Im about to change the oil (hopefully to quieten my two wheeled John Deere),
What oil should i go for?
Normally use 10w 40 Fully synthetic in my other bikes , but should i go thicker??
Also is fully synthetic the way to go?
cheers
Gareth

Hi Gareth

Before it all starts  ......... just use 10/40 mineral oil from your favourite brand. They burn it up fast so don`t throw expensive oil in the sump as it just comes out of the exhaust :D

Hope that helps.

Thanks for that, about to change it now.
Any problems or things to watch out for when im doing it?
Does the bash plate have to come off?
not looked into where it all is yet?

On the reverse tangent, things I've done that shouldn't be repeated:-

  • Have an oil catch tray that only holds 4l of liquid.
  • Have a fancy oil catch tray like one of those cans with an indent and hole on one side, only to find the oil comes out of the bike much much faster than it goes down the hole
  • Fit the old sump plug washer. Like how much did I *try* and save here?
  • Over tighten the sump plug
  • Don't tighten the sump plug enough
  • Forget to put the sump plug back before pouring in the new oil.
  • Forget to put the filling cap back on.
And put in the oil that the manufacturer recommends. They do this for many good reasons... ;)

P.S. - I can recommend a whole raft of really effective products that remove oil from concrete, tarmac, denim, leather etc....

had a look at the bike, im assuming the oil filter is hidden behind a plate on the bottom of the engine,as i cant see it anywhere else.
is that right?
is there a fill level bolt/bung to remove as well or is it fill with correct amount.
The two nuts and two bolts holding the bash plate on are likely to round off, have you any ideas ,im an ex HGv/commercial mechanic.
And struggle with 10mm stuff
thanks

The bash plate does get a lot of crud thrown at it, so spray the bolts with WD40 for a few days before you try to remove them. Wire brush the bolts first and ensure that you use a 6-point 10mm socket. I use a ¼" socket set for this job. Keep it VERY square to the bolt and ensure that the twisting motion is at 90-degrees to the bolt. It should come away OK. Don't go anywhere near the bike with your 1" square-drive socket set!!

You WILL NEED (ie not optional!!) an oil filter socket of the correct size to remove and refit the oil filter. DO NOT use a screwdriver - it it goes wrong you've got a really big task to remove the remains of the filter.

The genuine BMW filter socket is less that a tenner (I think) from a dealer.

Oil fill to the top of the sight-window under the left hand cylinder. Recheck after you've run the bike.

Thanks Greg,
good tips for the heavy handed.
It does look like the two front bolt heads have had some stick in the past.
Rounding shoulders etc.
May try warming them slightly
thanks again
