What price a new GS1200?

I am now in the position where I am seriously thinking of buying a new GS1200 (to replace my well used & loved R1100S) however, being a canny Scot, the price seems a tad excessive compared to most other makes of bikes especially when you start adding a few bits such as ABS, heated grips, panniers, engine bars, etc.

The GS 1200 has been on sale for 12 months+ and there appear to be lots of them about. Are people still paying list price for them, or are there deals to be had on the bike and/or accessories ? Any pointers about prices to pay or dealers with deals would be appreciated.

I think you'll find that most dealers are selling them at list price. While demand for them exceeds supply, they have no reason to discount them.

Its possible you might get a deal on some of the accessories, but it would be unlikely you will get any movement on the list price.

If you are looking to part exchange the 1100S, try a few dealers to see what they would offer you for it. The figure you get offered will vary from dealer to dealer. If you can sell the S privately, that is the better option for you.

Bob's right on both counts.

When you think about the part ex value of a bike, from a dealers point of view, if they're expected to re-sell the bike then they need to bring it up to spec re consumables/service etc before selling it. Any new purchaser would also expect some form of a warranty, so the dealer will only usually offer a trade value to cover their costs. More often than not you'll get a better ate from selling to the public.

You'll be very lucky to get any discount on the bike. However, to sweeten the deal, a good dealer will sell you accessories & clothing at just above cost.

As long as it's not costing him money and it helps to get a new bike out of the door, it's in his interest to do so - so if you need a new helmet, boots, suit etc, haggle for a substantial discount on those (you should be able to get 20% without trying - more if you press to test).

In Ireland, they are not discounting the GS, but are offering a 500 euro credit note for Accessories.. Seems to be standard across dealers..

This is without a trade-in, i.e. cash-only..

When I bought mine in December, for late January delivery, I was told that BMW had increased their prices but I've not heard of this anywhere else.

As others have said, they can sell any bike they get without discounting and suspect that they will do just that.

If it wasn't such a great bike, I'd avoid BMW dealers.

In Canada the GS is selling for full list, however they are giving a little off for the accessories and possibly throwing in the PDI.

Hello all - i am the new boy.........
Recently ordered my first Beemer - a 1200GS after having lusted after the 1150 and now 1200 for years. Saved the cash with a little help from Auntie Visa and put the order in last week.

They wouldn't shift on list price but were prepared after a bit of haggling to throw in Heated Grips OR Engine Bars OR Spoked Wheels........ ended up buying abs, engine bars, chrome exhaust, extra power socket, and clear lenses.........they threw in the heated grips. I am very skint but a very happy man. Cant wait to swing a leg over..

Just bought a gs1200 last sunday,a cancelled order.Red,abs,chrome pipes,alarm,clear lens,heated grips.

Its my first bmw and i tryed,oh how i tryed to get a deal,i was there pleading,shouting,tryed all the angles i knew to get a discount.

no way.

tryed 3 other dealers all the same list price and the"if you don't want it somebody else will"line.

Even phoned BMW uk and complained to them,No good.

In the end i got a top box at what they say is cost price.

2 of the dealers had machines i could have had within a week,maybe i was just lucky but 3 in week.Price fixing comes to mind.

Yes, its called the list price, and sadly for us, they know they can sell the bikes at full list.

Errm - forgive me...

...but if you were selling your bike secondhand, and had several enquiries - would you sell to the first guy to turn up at lower than the asking price? Or would you wait to see what the next guy was going to offer?

Not discounting the 1200 is just good business (and good for those selling secondhand too...). Dealers are in the business of selling bikes to make money - they'll get as competitive as they have to to achieve this, in my experience...
