What riding a GS is all about.

I made a comment on the LC forum a few weeks ago (Fuel consumption post) and made a comment "if a GS is ridden how its supposed to be"
I was a bit surprised by the replies, it seems its all about speed and power etc.
This weekend I had a great trip to Anglesey and it was what I imagine GS riding is all about. Some motorway to get underway, over the moors and through busy towns to get to the Welsh border, then it was a programmed GPS route I had prepared earlier. I had no idea what the roads would be like, I put way points in to force a rough route but leave it up to my trusty Garmin to wiggle through the C and less roads to connect them together. Gravel, grass middles, mud and pot holes, duel carriage way, mountain passes, the GS was good for all the Garmin could put it through, two up with full luggage.

Nothing against the LC, I just love big flat twins. (PS 425 miles 53 mpg)
 
I mostly agree :D Some of my favourite roads are small unclassified dirty and moss strewn.

But ... (:D) whose to say how a GS is supposed to be ridden? Whilst I share your passion for getting off the beaten track I also have a passion for fast flowing glorious A roads - and the LC GS now eats those up rubbing shoulders with bikes like the Multistrada.

So yer can't chastise peepes if they ride their bike differently to you .. :D

This was all north Wales between Capel Curig and Ruthin, its possible with maps if you have very frequent stops. If you have a GPS such as my Garmin GPSmap60 it will work out a shortest route, press the button and enjoy. Some others only take you quickest route and miss all the fun.
Take time looking at Google earth etc to see roughly where you want to be, then work out the way points. Takes a bit of time but worth the effort.
Without GPS I have travelled these roads over the last 40 years and missed many smaller back roads.
 
Im getting sick of the New LC is best crap, Horse for courses. The old GS is tried and tested, its not perfect, but nothing is, I agree with the OP.

I could go out tomorrow and buy a LC, but instead i'm going to Geoff on the 11th, and Upgrading the Shocks at Rev's the day before. :D

I'm lucky enough to live i nthe peaks and have a bike so I know exactly what you mean, but my average MPG is 35-40 mainly because of allthe twisties and the green lanes that I like to run.
 
Compared to my other bikes the GS really is a do-it-all and it does it all really well indeed. :D

My only complaint is handlebar vibrations and according to Bike Mag (on a run with pillions from Italy to UK) all of their testers had problems with vibrations - on the new LC. So its not all perfection over there.

Can't agree more, the LC does do it all better than my old 27,000 mile twin-cam and my 45,000 mile 2005 1200GS, it is unequivocally better than either of those two - obviously can't comment on reliability yet but otherwise this one is better all round. I loved the two previous bikes, this one is just better.
