i have recently acquired an r80/7 1979 as a project bike for winter, master plan of taking engine out and giving engine and frame a really good clean up possibly vapour blasting and powder coating.

the engine needs new pushrod tubes so ill be changing the pushrod tubes and seals, head gaskets etc.

my question is what other jobs should i be looking at doing to the bike whilst its in bits? anything to gearbox/bevel etc?

this is my first airhead so looking forward to familiarising myself with it all.

i would like the engine to end up looking like this! ( credit to Rob Farmer owner of this image!)

grind the valves in

Does that mean new valves or regrinding existing?

Check for wear in the valve guides - the inputs may be OK but the exhaust guides wear quite rapidly . . . Then the valves jump about and the heads break off .

New valves & guides all round will give you peace of mind :thumb.

What sort of mileage has the motor done ??

Bob.

Check the valve seats to see if they have been replaced with unleaded seats, your looking for two parallel lines on the inside diameter. If there's no sign then it's worth having unleaded seats fitted.

Cam chain is worth replacing, yours is a duplex chain so is a pig to do and you must replace both sprockets as we'll otherwise the new chain will wear in no time at all. You'll be amazed how much better they run with a new cam chain and sprockets

A Boyer micro digital ignition is a good idea as well. the points work we'll if you can find original points and condensers but the crap Chinese items available now wear at a frightening rate and need constant fettling which is awkward. My 78 100/7 still has points fitted, the last set of original points were on for years, when I finally replaced them I could only get Chinese rubbish, I've had two sets in two years, they pit and burn in no time at all. Even the ones sold by bmw are crap.

Replacing the engine breather is a must on the heavy flywheel bikes.

thanks, its showing 50k, it used to be a police one apparently back in the day so that may be just a guess!

i was right with you upto the point "check the..!"

looking like a winter/spring project now! but thanks the unleaded valve guides was something i hadn't considered.

It may be a daft question but where do i get these engine parts, guides, sprockets etc? is it from BMW or are they available from other places like motorworks?

Not a daft question at all, I for one get all my stuff from Motor Works, but there are other good suppliers out there. :thumb2

Have a look at Moorespeeds valves and guides. They are cheaper than others on the Market and far better quality. I've over 5,000 on my first set and they have yet to need any adjustment.

Richie also turned them round in a week which is a far better service than any of the other engine guys out there.

I've just had him do "The Business" on another engine. Ported, Flowed and his biggest valves.
