Being a "Boxer" virgin, is there anything I should be aware of on my 54 reg R1200gs? By the way everyone seems mad on this site, I will fit in well me thinks. 
What should I look out for?

I have only had a Boxer for 10 months, but here's my 2 cents.
The rear brake pads come to mind. Mine were worn right out at 8,000 km.
Also if you have the BMW side cases, check the posts that they lock on to. Make sure that they are tight and the right height.
Check your Oil level often, Boxers like Oil.
Boxers/GS's like to be ridden in the snow and bad weather.
The best thing is to have a look at the Posts in the 1200 section.
