Anyone with clues on 2nd hand prices of a 1200GS??

Something with around 6000 miles (nearly new). Could be 2005 or older.
With heated grips, alarm?

How much if it has panniers and stuff on it?

Advice much appreciated :thumb

I'm looking around at the moment too.
Prices seem a bit on the high side.. Expect about 7500-8000 quid private.

I'm probably going to head to Germany to get one as the pricess seem a bit more sensible. You'll get a good one from a dealer over there for 10,000 - 10,500 Euros.
Best selling bike in Germany so plenty over there to choose from.

They rarely seem to sell with Panniers as these get crazy money on Ebay.

Reason for me going to Germany: Dealer here in Ireland looking for Euro14,800 for a 2004 model!
Private ad in Cork looking for 14,800 for a 2005.

I'm on the hunt, too. Given the reliability issues discussed here I've decided to buy from a dealer so at least I've got somebody to shout at from my hospital bed when the servos fail.

Cheapest I've seen is £8k. Most are £8-9k. Dealers do not seem to be interested in negotiating a discount even though I'm trying to buy two at once.

It is a mine field out there. There is a nice blue one at Bath Road with some decent accessories already put on it.

Just saw one go on ebay for £8.5k with panniers

Although I'm not interested in buying a 1200, when I was looking for an Adventure, there were far more advertised in Germany than in the UK, and I seriously thought about buying one and flying out to collect it, but seriously is it easy to do? Flights are cheap enough, but the only thing that put me off was the fear that I may get clobbered for taxes etc and get drawn into legal complications and beaurocracy I didn't know anything about.

I was told by a mate that the best way to import from Germany was to get somone in the services (but based in Germany) to buy on your behalf, but don't know how it works or whether its as simple as it seems. :nenau

I got did the deal for my bike last month and as always BMW dealers don't discount on the price of a new bike although you can negotiate dscounts on accessories at the time of purchase to "sweeten" the deal.

It's this policy and the "lmited" allocation of new bikes which in the long run maintain the value of the bikes which is a benefit to owners compared to other manufacturers.

My last bike cost me over £10500 and this year has a retail price of £10,900 yet because of unsold 2005 models being on offer for £8250 the value of my bike was far less than a comparitive 2 year old BMW.

Now before I get flamed let me say I'm not employed by BM, just a fan of the bike and someone who has been riding for 30 years and wished I had got one years ago.

One thing I do know is this is the time of year to be trying for a deal as come March/ April its a sellers market as the majority of people will want to buy.

Hope you find what your looking for out there.

Good luck :thumb

What should you pay

Nothing at all mate, save your money and sanity and buy japanese.

Mine's up for grabs. 12000 miles, just run in and super reliable. It took me and Mrs on two European trips last year without the slightest problem. For more details look in For Sale section.

What would you recommend? I have never ridden a sportsbike and don't think I will like them. Too scary.

Sportsbikes are in the minority, there are plenty of bikes like the GS with an upright riding position from british, italian and japanese makers, i favour japanese engineering, there are at least 4 faux offroaders like the GS, 1 proper all terrain adventure bike and some larger grand tourers like the RT.

For the former GS style bikes there's KTM ( Proper all terrain ) Honda, Triumph, Aprilia, Suzuki and Kawasaki.
The Triumph Tiger for 2007, which will be available summer 2006 is reputed to have a 128bhp 1050cc motor, upside down forks and radial brakes, so think very carefully before commiting to a BMW.

Spend a lot less than the price of a GS and fit some top class suspension from the outset, keep the original shocks to fit back on the bike when you sell it, experience has taught me that the suspension is the area that all manufacturers economise on and its the one where the most performance improvement can be made in handling, the shocks fitted to the GS in common with other components bought in by BMW are the lowest possible quality they can supply, so spend £3000 less on a new bike and fit Ohlins or similar from the start and any bike will handle well.
