1800 miles and the clutch started slipping on the way to Norwich. Amazing feeling to drop down a gear to pass a truck open the throttle and the tacho was the only thing that picked up speed then slowly the clutch bit and I was past. So I took it easy and I made it to Norwich but no BMW bike dealer so they shipped my bike to Peterborough however BMW emergency failed to tell me this was going to happen (time 4:00pm) I thought someone would look at it while I waited but waved goodbye to the bike at 7:00pm, this was Monday. They couldn't look at it Tuesday as the BMW emergency people never told them it was going to be there but found time and then no key. The morons who took it to Peterbro didn't leave the key,Yesterday still no key apparently they (morons) posted it. I am not sure what has upset me more the clutch going so early or joke of events after. I did report the clutch was smelling a bit on first service, I have a Vectra in lieu but Geeez!!! A clutch with no adjustment.

Last year Bike mag's long termer was reported as having a "smelly clutch" (not crotch haha... fish i think it was) have not heard of any other clutch probs (others may know differently?)
Think you have been unlucky at that mileage
BMW Assist (or whoever they used) deserve a :shoot:

Could be oil leak problem as you wouldn't have expected the friction linings to have worn this quickly.
BTW the clutch is self adjusting.

Just a thought

Too bad to hear about your misfortune...

... but one thing hit me; did you check that the clutch-handle wasn't touching the brush-guards..?!

I noticed the other day when I was washing my bike that my clutch lever gently touched the brush guard and didn't extend fully....

If I get mine nice and hot in stop start traffic my clutch/engine absolutly stinks of fish - I thought this was normal (for a GS12).

Am I the only one other than Bike magazine to notice this??

During my daily commute in the Boston area (46 miles each way) most of it on what I believe you folks call "motorway" (limited access interstate highway) I am routinely caught in very slow stop-and-go situations and I have never had an smells from my clutch or anything else for that matter. Oh, and I have a great huge proboscus, so would notice. :D

So, this must vary from bike to bike.

Clearly the EU Fishy Clutch did not get EPA approval!!!!!

Unfortunately we in the EU are obliged to accept the standards applied in fellow member countries and those TUV creeps in Cologne will approve anything for a fat fee!

Hope we've not been sold a kipper....(did'nt see that on the optional extras list!!) :D :D :D

Just did the BMW off Road Course, the clutch takes a lot of abuse & did smell. I asked Simon Pavey how long the clutches last, he said they had not had a problem.

I think if you search the forum there's plenty of people reporting the smelly clutch, but not any failures.
