i have used trailwings original fitment .. tourance .. 020s

rated 020s 1st 5800miles rear quick turn in ..exellent when wet superb white lining a good sign i always think

tourance 2nd 6000 rear good all round but limited in the wet compared to 020s
trailwings last 5000 rear not bad in the dry a blocks suirm on the rear ..the only tyre i have hit the wear marker on the outside before the middle on the right hand side ... little vague at the front
wet not so reassuring ...white line badly

the spin the back wheel up on worn tarmack when wet on our estate test

ist ..by a country mile 020s ... stubbern resistance

2nd tourance .... ferris wheel

3rd by some margin trailwing ........ catherine wheel

020s are the best road option bar none in my humble opinion

trailwing strange wear on the blocks that indicate distress when cornering
never seen a wear marker hit the outside before the middle either

Scrubbed

Just been out for a blast to scrub em in from edge to edge... :D

Done just short of 100 miles

Initial impression.... Mmmm!... not bad at all!?!

With nothing altered from when Tourances were fitted...

1. Much lighter front end.. easy to get bar wobble on bumpy bends... no great shakes tho!

2. Seems to corner faster..

3. High speed bends on good tarmac is steadier..

Things I'll do next..

1. Check pressures...
2. Try some different damper/preload setting..

BattleWing

Just checked tyre pressures - now that they've cooled..

Front = 37psi - as fitted
Rear = 41psi - as fitted

I think i'll reduce front to 32psi and rear to 36ish (as per tyre pressure guide for single occupant - as recomm on inside of right panel ) {for those that haven't discovered it - see pics} and give em another whirl!?!

Right help please its tyre changing time, rear Bridgstone trailwing on my GS12 needs replacing after 5000 miles, What do you guys recommend stick to Bridgestone :nenau or go for another make ? any advice would be appreciated.
They're all road tyres .... i find the black one are best ....

I have an 1100GS and I use Avon Distanzia tyres. They grip well and are long lasting.I have just replaced the rear tyre after 9,736 miles and it still has 2.5mm of tread. When it was new it had 9mm! A front and a rear cost me £146.87 fitted. I get mine from Micheldever Tyres near Winchester. Great service, great price, and a great guy that fits them. :clap :clap

Stigster!

OK bud wossitlike with the lower pressures? My new ones are going on the beast on Monday, I'd like to start low and work up (air-pressure wise you pervs!) Come on I'm dying to know!

I see you've got the tell tale sign on your tire of having a Motorrad Concept hugger fitted!

Just been to price up a new pair of tyres. Not sure whether to go for trail type again, (currently on Tourances, no complaints), or road tyres such as Bridgestone 020s, Michelin Pilot Road or Contis. I called in to speak to Trevor Richards of Pontardulais Tyres, and he recommends Michelin Anakees, (he uses them on his R1100GS). Reckons they grip better than Tourances but give less mileage. Any views???

Oh yes, he quoted me £140 fitted for a pair! :thumb

Well... Tyre pressures lowered... still bouncy on the norfolk roads...

Went for a blast on Sunday eve.. (two up) with solo pressures and rear pre-load set at bout three quarters... Seemed better on the rear!?... Still a tendancy to "bar wobble" - over humps n, bumps - on the the front tho...

They generally "feel" harder too.. You get a lot of feedback from uneven surfaces compared to the Tourance.. "bumpier ride" than T's.. that is!?!?

I reckon that you'll need to play with the Dampening to get the best from these tyres... Altho the standard shocks don't have any adjustment on the front!?!? (i believe!?!)

If you ride smooth flowing fast A roads - They're good..

But... My experience to date suggests that Tourances are the better tyre "overall" for the type of roads and riding I do in Norfolk etc.

Oh!.. btw.. I have to ride up n' down nearly a miles worth of farm track to get to my house!?!?... and they're naff on the loose gravel... compared to Tourances - that is!! - they make the bike snake like hell!?!

Woo hoo!

I've got mine on now running on 32f and 36r and softened the front preload a notch and its LOADS better than the Dunlops that were on! Maybe my local roads arent as bad as Stigsters but I really like the turn in now and I havent had the wobbly feeling at all but did used to get a lot with the 607s. Still managed to get the rear to squirm a bit on a left hander but that might be beacuse they are new? Overall? I'm pleased with them!

£102 Battlewing rear ??

Just been quoted £102 for Battlewing fitted to rear wheel

Is that too much ???

Now I am fully aware of what is ideal , i.e. matching tyres F&R and please shoot me down for this thought oh knowledgeable ones :bow :bow , but shall I also change my D607 front which still looks like new after 9500 miles

You're kidding

My front 607 lasted the life of two rears i.e. 8-9000 miles. Even given different riding styles etc that seems incredible that yours is not worn........

To answer your question, I may be tempted to (but probably wouldn't) change just the rear if the front only had one or two thousand miles on it but, despite what you say about the tyre looking like new, at nearly 10,000 miles I would change it to match the rear.

For the sake of £80 or so.........................

All IMVHO of course :)

8k on original Anakees.

I think the mileage acheived with different tyres is more dependant on riding conditions than the actual tyres (hence the disparity in what contributors to this thread report). I do 100 miles a day commute from rural Kent to SW London taking in coutry roads, M25 and gridlocked London snarl up. The original rear tyre is now due replacement. The original front looks good for a while yet, but the a closer look reveals that the leading edge of each 'block' is significantly worn (caused no doubt by frequent hard braking). Because the rear of the block is hardly worn it looks at first glance that the tyre has a way to go, but I am sure braking performance will soon be comprimised.

Although very impressed with the Anakees grip and life I think I will go BT020's next as the only dirt by tyres come across comes from horses and dogs.

Grinning GSer...

Im my experience (chucked bikes down road many years ago) it is not wise to mix tyres....... Common sense should shout at you, diferent tyre requires a pair. Compounds move on profiles change subtely and although you may "get away with it" is your arse/neck/earning capabilty/devilishly handsome good looks* worth compromising becausae it "looks OK to get few more miles out of?????

I rode a 12GSA with trailwings on last week, and belive me I COULDNT WAIT to get back on mine with the Battlewings on Soooooooooooo much better!!! Search fleebay for R1200GS there is a tyre place in Liecester selling pairs for £160. I told my local Tyre guru who matched the fitted price so £100 for a rear sounds a bit dear.

I cannot stop you getting a (difererent) rear only, but would strongly advise against it, so either a) get another Trailwing rear until the front is bolloxed or b) get a new pair now and enjoy the transformation !!

Mmmmm!.. your comparison (experience) is tween Dunlops n' Battlewings.. Mine's tween Tourance n' Battlewings... Perhaps there's something in that eh!?

Aint been out since last report (my 3 boys where over this w/e).. but will get out either later this week or def over w/e .. for another evaluation!??! ;)

Speaking of Heidenau, i have noted they have a new tyre, the K76, sometimes called "K76 Reiseenduro". It is available in the usual 12GS sizes 150/70-17 and 110/80-19 with speedindex H. I seem to recall seeing a picture of the treadpattern and found them to look pretty similar to Metzeler Tourance.
