We will show you what is the appeal of punching: it is an action technique used to correctly fasten the top cap of the fork by marking in 4 points.

Yes. I think they also say that these markings, used to correctly fasten the screwed in cap, were present in previous versions of the GS. I guess the famous special tool sent by BMW to their dealers to carry the recall is used to do those markings.

Some more info here nothing major just the forks could fall off:blast

I don't ever think that was going to happen! the forks are still held at the top and the lower brace - the lower pinch bolts would have to come loose too and the forks would need to rotate round and round a gazillion times to unscrew the top part as well. It sounds like a precaution in case the top fitting came loose at the same time as the pinch bolts on the lower clamp (highly unlikely). I guess that they were just 'locking' the top thread by 'dimpling' the tubes onto the thread????

If the top bolt becomes detached from the yoke, the tube will simply slide down. The fork tubes are not held in place by a lower clamp. All steering would be lost if this happened. The result could be very nasty. Steptoe's excellent guide to changing a fork seal shows this.

Just thought about this again - you are correct, I don't know how long the thread is in the tube - guess it is quite fine with many turns - but not good if it comes lose!, I guess it ought to be torqued up correctly and lock-tighted too. Looks like BMW's fix is a good 'un though.
