What's all this ESA anyhow?

Does anyone have a complete explanation of how this system actually works?

I do, its MAGIC. that's all you need to know. Ride the bike, enjoy, :blast

I intend to keep the bike longer than 2 years , even with extended warranty ESA is covered up to 18000 miles . On my R1200RT the cost of replacing the ESA ( lost all the oil in damper) was close to £1500 ( shock + control unit) plus labour .
So my decision on not having ESA is based purely on cost.

i don't have Dynamic ESA on my GSLC too. Still goes round corners like a bike.

.

Whether you like it or not ...want it or not ...computer controlled suspension is the future.

It's just another toy to make us smile (or cry when out of warranty). Now can anyone answer my question, does Dynamic ESA have a lean angle sensor? The HP4 system is made by Sachs and does have lean angle sensors (like the Ducati MTS Skyhook), but as far as I know, the Dynamic ESA is not Sachs, so does it have the same wizardry (now that I know that it is magic), as the HP4 system?

It must have an accelerometer OR the computer tells it that the bike is accelerating, because it firms up the rear on acceleration.

Wow, so it maybe , effectively, similar to the Ducati Skyhook Sachs system :nenau

I'm no Techno wizard and usually stay well clear of anything I don't understand.
However, after having ESA on my TC and likeing it I opted to go for the "Dynamic ESA" on my WC.

There is a particular road that I ride regularly, it's a single track and at times very undulateing lots of gnarley bits etc

Honestly the way the WC covers this road compared to my TC is a revelation.

Sorry I can't explain it technically but I do know what the seat of my pants tells me.
It's brilliant.

I too know bugger all about fancy electronics, but I think I have a pretty good feel for how a bike is riding.
Whatever they've done on the LC, it's bloody good. I had a play with a work mate the other day on a selection of country lanes. He was on his VFR1200. Ok, so the bikes are pretty different, the GS is famed for its lovely front end flickability and the VFR is a big fast smooth A road muncher, but even so - my work colleague is a bloody good rider and afterwards he was pretty amazed at just how well the GS was coping with the bumpy roads and how in particular, it was able to put down it's power and still drive. He was really struggling to hold on to the GS's coat tails (well ... he wasn't ... :D) and was saying that he just couldn't get on the gas on some corners because the tyres were still skipping and chattering. And that's the sort of difference that good suspension will make, the GS seems to float over that gnarly stuff and allow you to get on the drive where others are waiting for it all to settle down before they can pick the gas up.

I think it's very very good .... :thumb2

Its fantastic. The bike handles noticeably different in each mode. But dynamic mode is just incredible for being super accurate and the turn in is night and day from rain mode. I love it. It may be a "toy" to some but I get a different bike feeling in each mode ! Like having a multi bike in one !

I also have WC with standard suspension.
There is one corner that I don't like much, that has a series of skitty bumps 2/3 of the way around that upsets the front each time I forget to take it easy.
Would ESA be able to handle this corner without drama?

ESA has been out for a number of years now, but this dynamic incarnation seems to have sneaked in with little announcement and little technical detail. If it's the same as fitted to the HP4 and I believe that it is the same Sachs system , then it is very clever indeed.
Did the WC launch with dynamic ESA ? Does it have lean angle input like the HP4 ? Why are both systems given different names ?

Hi Giles, yes I'm still hovering, actually over the new GSA at Ocean....however ref the fancy electronics, the best way I can describe it is that I found that I could virtually ignore the bumps/ripples on a bend and concentrate on the shape of the bend and the bike took care of the surface. Made me relax more while cornering than any previous bikes.

The WC was available at launch in '13 with dynamic ESA if you chose that version.
I am not aware that the WC has a lean sensor which would explain the different names.
PS. It is very clever and really does work.

Whilst test riding the new GSA yesterday I asked my dealer if it had a lean sensor like the HP4 and he said yes. I do not think that is correct but await any learned response.

Also, I took Mrs out for a spin yesterday on back of 2014 GSA , preload two helmets and comfort soft and she was very very happy indeed and the ride was another league from my manual system.

I was out yesterday, and had been riding the bike all weekend in Dynamic/ Hard. When my back started to ache on the way home, I put it in Soft mode, and it soaked up all the bumps. By the time I got home, my back was fine.:beerjug:

I wouldn't have a GS without it.:rob

Appreciate this May be a silly question, how do you know if the ESA is dynamic? Are they all dynamic if ESA is fitted?

Dynamic/ Road/ Rain/ Enduro/ Enduro Pro is the throttle/ traction mode, Hard/ Soft/ Normal is the DESA setting.:thumb
