Whats covered and whats not

My 1200gs Warrantee runs out mid April. It’s a 2008 bike with 6k on the clock and full service history. I have given it a really good clean today and found corrosion around the front cover. It is really un-sightly, I am not impressed.
I wash the bike off regularly and if used over winter hose the salt off it after every use. My previous bikes (Honda) has never had this problem with build quality.
So the question is this covered under the BMW warrantee?

if you wash your bike more ,it wouldnt be :censor:

Mate, the off topic icon should have a smiley face!

Anyhooooo yes I could make you a special pal - it would cost either £10 more or a good bottle of Barolo (an italian red - my current weapon of choice) :thumb

Either way mate sadly there`s no way I`ll get a special done this week and on friday I`m dicking off for threeeeeeeeeee weeks woohoo.

But, if I come back alive and you want to give me a nudge I`ll very gladly make a special for you!

ok thanks mark, will have to catch up later as im off to spain for 2 weeks at easter:beerjug:

def want one,thanks again.regards andy.

My point was a bike of 3 years old should not corrode. My last 3 Hondas did not, so I would expect a BMW not to. If they can do it with their cars (12 year anti corrosion warranty ) why not bikes?

That's because like all car manufacturers the warranty re corrosion is an anti-perforation warranty, in other words it has to corrode from the inside out which of course it will not do

Unfortunately the damage caused to the front cover is normally started by road debris hitting the cover then water penitrating the weakend powdercoated surface. Add in some road dirt and a bit of salt and there you have it. One knackered looking cover :blast

Fix the cover, fit a crudcatcher, spray it all in ACF50 and ride :thumb2

The corrosion started at the allen bolts in the front cover (steel) and as these have started to give up they have passed the rot onto the alloy cover.

New stainless bolts ordered. Cover will be repaired or replaced. New crud catcher ordered. I will ride and enjoy the bike:)

Just booked the Eurotunnel for June looking forward to Europe and the great roads

Stainless bolts will make the alloy corrosion worse unless you isolate them. Generally not a huge problem but on something that already has a known corrosion problem its not going to help.

That will be the copper slip then:)
I intend to have the cover fully sealed both sides and then ACF50:)

If you have an Anniversary model..........

This could be off topic :topic but bearing in mind the crud catchers have already been mentioned then this might be relevant.

if anyone has an Anniversary model and still needs the protection there is a shortened version available :thumb2

here it is, it also allows for Remus pipes to be fitted as it does not extend down as far as the standard.

The item arrived in the post today. I will bring it with me tomorrow when picking up the bike.

Must say I am a bit miffed with the service levels of BMW. I know I have had a rant saying that the finish on the BM is poor, and should be much better for the price you pay for the item in the first place. A bike should not look seriously second hand after one winter. It should be up to the standard. I live in the UK not Siberia, the bike is cleaned weekly and during the winter hosed down after every use. Scotoiler winter spray was used in copious quantities and still the finish lets me down.
But then the service from BMW and their lackeys. Well I suppose the Adventurer Biker warehouse gets my business from now on. The bike was dropped off this afternoon and I already have pics of the front engine plate in its new paint.
Now that's service, BMW could learn a lot from this man, Buy a BMW, you will have a great bike that you will enjoy immensely but forget about that finish it won't last.

Bmw Very poor service indeed.

Sad init?

Sad, init, about the finish? Shagtastic bike spoilt like that.

Anyway, rudiemoto`s ACF50 is a very good one in conjunction with crud catchers, mudslingers and other stuff - at least we can do something about keeing the finsih half decent.

enjoy the hobnobs.

Wow

What can I say...

After a disappointing week finding out how crap BMW service can really be.. I dropped the bike off at Adventurer Warehouse yesterday as I would have had problems getting to work otherwise..
At 9pm I get a SMS from Johno showing me the front cover that has been stripped and cleaned, etch primer and painted...
After work called to collect the bike and wow, no one does service like this bloke. He had fully serviced the bike, including cleaning and polishing the rusting bolts in the calipers. He has fully stripped and cleaned the pads and re-fitted.
Bike has new Gearbox oil, Engine oil, Final Drive oil. New BMW oil filter, balanced the throttle bodies, valves fully adjusted. And at significantly lower cost than BMW had quoted me.

This level of service is totally outstanding, I can honestly say I have never experienced a better service, he even fitted my new engine front plate (crud catcher) as I waited.

Drove the bike home and it feels like a new bike, bloody superb. Come on Europe (only 9 weeks away)

If you live within traveling distance of Manchester you really do want to consider the Adventurer Warehouse for your service stop. I do not think you will get any better service.
