What's going on with the 05's GS ????

Just bought an 05 about six weeks ago. It was manufac. in Nov. 04 and sold to me as an 05. Sounds good so far right ???

Today I go to my dealer in Montreal for some new rubber and decided to look at the new bike section while waiting for my service to be completed.

I was shocked to see that BMW has upgraded the stock exhaust !!! Man am I pissed ! Not only does it look 100 X better but it also sounds quite different. This bike is also being sold as an 05.

What's happening in England ... you guys also getting screwed over by BMW ???? :p1zzed:
 
Yeah - I have noticed that too. They now have a silver end part rather than the black most of us have.

It miffes me why we pay 05 prices for bikes built at the end of 04.
 
mine is dated March 05 with the silver end part; I confirm that the sound is better
 
While ordering mine the dealer did mention an optional extra on the exhaust side of things,

can't remember what it was :confused:

I think that you'll find the silver ended exhaust is a cost cutting measure.

BWM have removed the back pressure valve that diverts exhaust gases at higher flows.

So the black un is maybe better.

As Wraithwrider points out, there was a big hoo-hah on here a few months back with many people complaining that they had a bike with one of these "upgraded" exhausts :D

No one has (to my knowledge) done a comparison of the two models on a dyno or anything like that, so we have no real evidence that one is better than the other.

Not strictly true, an 05 can be any combination of the above... my 05 model has the "newer" silver end exhaust, came with two keys, but did come with a shite excuse for a toolkit...

i know others that have had black end exhaust, two keys and crappy toolkit too...

the point being, the key thing seems to be very "random", the exhaust seems to be a Post september 04 up to pre-march 05 build (black end) and the toolkit seems to be a common failing on everything since about Nov 04 (build date, not delivery)

As for the exhausts... as Mouse quite rightly says.. until someone actually tests the two variants back to back, we'll never know... The orinal Black ended one had the back pressure thingy... but just because the newer model doesn't seem to have it, doesn't mean the internals aren't different? It could be cost cutting, it could be just design change, it could be improvement... we just don't and won't know....

Any volunteers for the test??????

I'd be really curious too.. especially if it smoothes out the motor ..
