My 1200 GS LC 2013 is due a service at 25K. Anyone know what's serviced at this mileage and rough costs? I'm assuming possibly valve clearance check, oil/brake fluid replacement and drive chain servicing...?

It's out of warranty so contemplating doing myself or passing to an independent. Any advice?

Cheers

Ring your local dealer they will give you a price without obligation if its good go for it, OR even email them.

Spanners, filters, oil and money, maybe some coolant as well.

Well usually the service manager has a guess at a price then sucks his teeth and hmmms and arrrs a bit then you hand over loads of cash

If anyone quotes for a drive chain walk away. JJH

Have a look in your handbook it will tell you there what's done at each service .If you haven't got it you can down load it from the BMW motorad site

I believe everything on the bike gets sorted. New everything including a new wallet as the old one is empty.

I think that its a basic 12k check. So...
Performing vehicle test with BMW Motorrad diagnostic system
Oil change, engine, with filter
Oil change, rear wheel drive (every 2 years)
Checking valve clearance
Replacing spark plugs
Replace air filter cartridge
Visual inspection of the hydraulic clutch system
Visual inspection of the brake pipes, brake hoses and connections
Checking front and rear brake pads for wear
Checking front and rear brake discs for wear
Changing brake fluid, front and rear brakes
Checking coolant level
Checking ease of movement of side stand
Checking ease of movement of centre stand
Checking tire pressures and tread depth
Checking lights and signalling equipment
Function test, engine start suppression
Final inspection and check of roadworthiness
Setting service-due date and service countdown distance
Checking battery charge state
Confirming BMW Service in on-board documentation

I did my own 12k this year and though I would not use the word 'doddle' it wasn't as bad as I thought. My outlay was Fluids (Engine Oil, Final Drive and Brake fluid), Filters (Air and Oil) Pads and plugs. Pads on reflection could've lasted another year.

The list above looks right.
Furthermore, I have the Haynes manual, and it says up to 2 years and 18k it's mainly checks for wear, routine fluid changes and new easy things (sparks and filters).
For 18,000 miles+, it mentions changing fork oil so not sure if you've done that or fancy giving it a go.

When ever you have "Checking valve clearance", there is the possibility adjustment being needed. Whilst not rocket science this is a cams out and shim job on the LC so a little more involved than a basic service.
BMW recommend special tools, but its not clear to me if they are really required. anybody done the job care to comment.

You might like to check Jim van Bodem website (link here below). I bought his DVD with clear instructions on how to maintain your bike. I own a GS2014 LC and I have done all maintenance until now at 21k miles, and let the dealer done only the warranty stuff. Maintenance is simple, requiring not much mechanical experience.
