what's the real tank capacity of an R1200GS?

Cane it down a motorway at warp factor nine and your 40 'accurate' measure will go straight out of the window. Ride it around at 4k or less rpm in an upper gear and it could become 60, perhaps? Experience will tell you much more than a dodgy float meter and shonky electrics.

My 07 GSA OBC does just that, and I don't have to remember what the miles to light etc for that particular gear / revs / speed etc :)

I've managed to get 20.75 litres in mine, bog standard tank no alterations.

I use the gauge as an indication, I know from experience roughly how far mine will go at various states of riding and as such use the odometer as my true guide. I've had the rundown reading zero a couple of times and still been OK. I usually top the tank up at between 180 and 220 miles or so or whenever the garage appears.

What’s the big fascinaution with the exact capacity of the fuel tank?

Does it make a huge difference if it’s 19 or 20 or 21 litres. It goes reasonably far and further than many.

I don't care if it's 19 or 20 or 21. I just don't like it shouting "FUEL! FUEL!" at me after only 10-12L is used, and wondered if that was normal.

See...that's the way to do it. :thumb2

Don't worry how big the tank is. Just know how far, near enough, it will go on a tankfull. :)

Hi there,
Knowing the range of a full tank can be bloody useful - esp here with big distances between fuel.
I have taken the rubber neck out of mine and regularly get 20L in when close to empty.
I can get 450+ range out of a tank on tar riding carefully but usually get around 400.
I have had the fuel guage down to zero + 12Kms once - then put 21 litres in:)
So now I have a fair idea how far I can push it. IIRC someone posted the results of a test on here and managed +16 before the bike conked out.
Good to know.

So....somebody else who knows what the range of his bike is....and doesn't seem much bothered if it's 20 or 21 litres to fill the tank up....

Seems to be the way to go! :thumb

If this helps.I have an '06 1200.Last year i rode down from Scotland to Scarborough, the bike had covered about 1600 miles from new.I decided that come hell or high water I would find out what i could do on a full tank.On the motorway and travelling at 70-80 MPH fully loaded with panniers and top box.I covered 225 miles(224.74 to be pedantic).I got almost 22 litres in the tank full to the brim, bounced and filled some more 22 litres.I covered about 6 miles after the countdown hit zero, the counter hit zero on the A64 near York and I chickened out and filled at Malton.
I now know that at or around 200 miles I need to fill but i do not need to panic untill 224.
if I am touring with luggage.

240 miles is what I use as my theoretical maximum range on my standard 1200. In this country that isn't a concern. When touring with sports bikes, I become the "spare fuel can" (with a length of tube), with GSA's I'm the one we work fill-ups around. I have put just shy of 21 litres in mine on occasion.

So where does your problem lie then? :)

I think the big issue here is not how big is the tank, but if its screaming for fuel after only using 10-12 L

mbp, if i am down to the count down thingy, then I can get 18 litres in (i have removed the rubber bungy thing)

If you can get 8-10 litres of fuel in, then I would go back to BMW and ask for the calibration to be checked :thumb

Just to "black cat" you a little.

May 2007 Edinburgh to Hull, 243 miles one standard GS tank of petrol. 20.75 litres to fill her up. This was at 65-75mph on mainly A roads with full panniers.

22.4 litres, stock '04 ,but with rubber ring removed, 8 miles past "0"..

Don't trust your gauge if the bike has had the tank off: Ran dry and had a bit of a push with 17 miles still showing.

After a full refill gauge will be back to normal.

On the northern section during the 'Pink Way Round' ride, I left home, up to Fort Bill and round, leaving the group at Garve then Inverness and back home - as near as dam it 300 miles. I thought my furl gauge was broken as just before I got home the '50 miles to go' warning came on. An indicated 350 miles to MT:eek:
I can't remember how much I put in - but does it matter?
