Whats this gear lever bolt called?

My gear lever rubber peg fell off whilst riding today, thankfully I retrieved it. But the bolt that holds it on was nowhere to be seen. Does anyone know what size/type of bolt I need to buy please? I recall when I adjusted the rubber peg a few weeks ago it was a torx bolt? Obviously I didn't tighten it up properly!

Anyway, rather than phone BMW Assist I decided to bodge it with a twig, some wire and a piece of cable tie. Thank for Lord for cable ties :bow

Depends whether the gear lever hole is threaded or not - if no thread, then you need a nut as well.

I'd guess it would be threaded, though.

The BMW Parts Fiche doesn't list the bolt as a separate part... :confused:
 
The gear lever hole is threaded. I guess I could use any bolt of the correct size? According to the Fiche above, it looks like BMW would make my buy the whole arm?
 
It's cleverly installed from underneath so if it does come loose its inevitable it'll drop out.
I shall be putting a dab of loctite on mine tomorrow.

Excellent bodge, by the way. Twigtastic.
 
If you get a bolt a bit longer you'll be able to put a lock nut on it, increasing security.

I did consider getting BMW to come out and recover me, but not sure how well that would have gone down here!:eek:

Mine too fell out and needed same bodge,was in for service and I asked Leigh (rainbow) to bung a new one in. He did and it's in the opposite way so less likely to fall out:thumby:

It is, or certainly SHOULD be, normal good practice in design and engineering.

I don't doubt that BMW have it, you only have to look at the Hossack>Telelever adaptation, and many of the other innovations that have quietly been adopted.

It seems though that the guys in the "how nuts and bolts go together" design department never got to sit in on the "common sense engineering from the basics upwards" sessions, let alone the "whacky in a different kind of way brilliant solution engineering concepts" advanced design crew meetings :blast

If you mean he put it in from the top, you might want to check that.
On mine, its a pinch bolt, only the top section is threaded. A bolt in through the top wouldn't do nowt.
