When my wife gets a WhatsApp message on her iPhone she doesn’t always get the first line or so on the home screen, not a huge issue of course. This is a glitch that comes and goes, and at the moment it’s fine.

The question is, will she loose the chats and contacts she has if I uninstall and reinstall the app? I have an idea that I did it for her some time ago without any issues but having Googled the issue it seems that I need to back everything up in iCloud or some bloody thing.

Will I? :)

Nope it shouldn't.
She can also backup the chats online (in case) before uninstalling the app.

This setting can be reverted to no backup later.

Sounds like a settings issue in Whatsapp. Go into settings on Whatsapp and click on "In App Notifications" and select which one you want.

it probably comes and goes as it will be linked to show preview only when unlocked.

Is it an iPhone with face ID?
The notifications previews (first line) on the locked screen are only shown when you are looking at the screen by default, as EPG was saying above.

You can change this behaviour in the iPhone's settings.
